Re: Lion scratches

Post by Big Horn Posse »

here is some of what Mike just mentioned,

All these scratches I posted on this thread were from the same ridge. I counted 8 all together. Some fresh some not so fresh. I also found 3 old kills. Nope not telling where this ridge is either.

Lotsa good info and pics on this thread,Im soaking it in,but more questions pop up as in the scale of the scat,The white scat is pretty small compared to what was in my mind to the size of the critter,The pinecones and twigs in BHPosse last pic look pretty small, also noticed that the scat has a segmented apperance, and mostly broken apart,so my question is do lions typically leave such small scat compared to their size? or is the scat that small due to its age? (the scat I mean) Also yes I know that the size of the scat will be affected by the size of the critter and food consumed ect .. Im asking in general about size and apperance if there is any?Hope Im making sense, like when you are out tramping in the hills and look around and hey there is some bunny sign, over there is some deer sign,on and on, the reason I ask is I want to know what catches your eye first, alot of these pics look very similar to stuff Ive seen in the past,(before hounds) I thought the scat would be larger, but maybe in my mind Im comparing it to the hound scat, anyways thanks for the help..Ken

2ndhound,
To answer your question about the scat in my photo. That was an old scratch. As I said I found 8 that day on that ridge. When scat is fresh it has moisture in it and the older it gets the drier it gets. Just like making jerky, you dehydrate the meat and it shrinks. I have some fresher scat photos, but they are not on my computer.
