" The secret in training dogs is based on mutual understanding and cooperation.....buy understanding, I mean conveying to the dog what you mean in a way that he will understand.....After mutual understanding has been established, then comes cooperation, and that means helping hounds in ways that are not possible for the hounds to help themselves. But be careful not to try to help them where your help is not needed, such as helping them trail, which is not cooperation, but is a form of pernicious activity" Montague Stevens

BINGO!!!!!
We have a winner!!!!
horshur yare dead on. After learning this with dogs and horses the one armed handicapped man was able to accomplish more than one could imagine. This SECRET as he called it lead to all the other revelations he had.
His understanding of what hounds could accomplish
His understanding that fighting dogs were no help
His understanding the laison dogs increased his catch percentage by 70%
That he no longer need broncho breakers as he called them but using kindness and his laison horses or draft horses and the sweep he could eliminate the majority of the time and effort of training young horses.
Just a huge amount of revelation in this book. I can't pick it up and re-read a section without gaining or recalling something of benifit.
Great Job!

Re: Motague Stevens
I like the guys that shock the hell out of their dog for not coming to them, when they never really taught the dog what come here means. I'd run away too.
