Larry, can't argue with that. I'm not a big "organic" type of guy. I don't really care for the "green" train of thought either.

I feed Enova Evo 52-25. It has no soy and no corn fillers, it is an all meat base dog food. I get it really cheap so thats the only reason I feed it. Normaly it's $60/28.5lb sack I get it for about a quarter of that. I also feed my puppies Taste of the wild Bision & Venision 36-22 I dont get that cheap so I only feed my young puppies it, it also has no soy or corn fillers, it's around $45/38.5 lb sack.

Bawl Mouth,
What kind of dog food do you feed? I like the idea of self feed however every pack I've seen on self feed were fat enough to butcher, the only bear they would have been able to catch would be pop ups.
PS: The above mentioned hounds were strictly coon hounds.

i have found most people who have fat dogs feeding free choice are not doing it corectly. all it takes is that dog to look at an empty for even a minute they forget all they know and keep eating lots.

Anybody try Nutrena, the Red Flannle around here is getting out of hand, and I got a guy willing to get me some Nutrena for pretty cheap.

Do not try Nutrena, it is mostly corn , not much meat. I've been going crazy trying to get lots of scraps from the butcher.

I've been feeding black gold the 26-18 black bag. Its garbage in my opinion. If your hunting those dogs hard they don't hold weight and seem tired. The red bag is better if your hunting almost every day. I know of some guys out here that quit black gold and went to Enhance hunters edge and loved it.

Depends on the dog....I have a couple easy keepers and a couple hard keepers. Turk is a hard keeper. he eats 6 cups of extreme athlete a day and still gets to thin when I hunt 4-5 days in a row.
Penni is easy.....3 cups of sporting dog during the on season and maintenance during the off.

Re: what brand of dog food do you feed?
I feed Diamond Naturals. I've tried all of them, Beef & Rice (25/15), Lamb & Rice (24/14), Chicken & Rice (26/16) and Extreme Athlete (32/22). I like Extreme Athlete the best. You can get by feeding them next to nothing, they hold weight and have great stool. It's about $31/40lbs, so I only feed it in the real cold or hard hunting months. I like the Chicken & Rice for the hunting and cooler temp months, and Lamb & Rice for the warm lazy months. The C&R and L&R run about $24/40lbs and B&R for $21/40lb. Dogs didn't really like the Beef & Rice, and the coats started to look dull.
I just recently started feeding the Diamond Performance (30/20) in the Black&Purple bag, I can get it for $27/40lb. They were out of Diamond Naturals the last time I bought food, so I got 3 bags of this. I wouldn't normally feed regular Diamond with all the corn in it, but they have done real good on it and corn is actually way down on the list in this food. So far so good, keeping weight, not eating a lot, no upset over the change, and not much waste. They seem to like the taste too, even my picky hounds eat it.
I also will occasionally feed Science Diet when I get a good deal on it at work. Corn or not, they have awesome coats and hardly any poop. I've always been a fan of Iams as well. But I'm not rich either.
