Making a lion hound without any help
Re: Making a lion hound without any help
BHP,
I applaud your inner strength and conviction to follow your dreams and desires. And the videos are cool too, gives me something to do on Sat nights.
Are you gonna add to your pack after Bella comes into her own?
Did you go to the Chris Ledoux dedication in Kaycee? Western Underground's one of my favorite bands.

Re: Making a lion hound without any help
dubl_t,
Thanks for the nice words.
I am sure I will get another pack together. The thing I love most about hunting lions is training the pups. Right now I am going to just focus on her until I get back on my feet again. I don't see myself ever being without hounds ever again.
No, I wasn't able to go to the dedication. I used to live in Kaycee and have a bunch of friends there and would like to go see it one of these days. Heard it was a good turn out.

Re: Making a lion hound without any help
I've trapped tons of coon. Fish will catch coons cats skunks otter mink. If you use something sweet like bread with maple syrup you won't get all the unwanted critters. There is coon lure. Sweet stuff and fruit are the safest for targeted game. That's how I kept fluffy out of my foot traps near town.
Re: Making a lion hound without any help
When I was trying to figure out the same thing a few years back...guys on here told me to use the marshmallows and when I did I quit catching possums. The only other thing I caught besides coons was a grey fox and I think that was more due to the fact I inadvertently set it next his den. I also ran out of the small marshmallows that time and only had the big ones...someone told me the fox took it cause it looked like an egg.
I just stuck the trap in some brush right near a likely trail and made sure they'd have to go in the front to get the bait. Marshmallows worked real good for me...thinking about trappin' one for my 1/2 blue, 1/2 walker...looks a lot like Bella and she's about 5 months old now. She saw her first bit of game in a cage the other day with some lion scent on it...she did real good ended up treeing on it good too...now to start laying some longer trails.
Good luck.

Re: Making a lion hound without any help
Thanks for all the advice guys, but I am still leary of setting one myself. I have been asking and trying to convice one of the guys here on the ranch to trap one for me so I don't have to bother with it, but I guess I lack that whole needy feminine quality that make men do anything for a girl.
Might need to work on that.
I have a hayfield right across the road from my place and I may just have to go set the stupid thing myself. I am still debating that. I really really hate skunks and that I why I am hesitant about setting it. I still think coon trapping and skunk removal is man's work! I am not affraid to be in the kitchen cooking for a man, as long as he doesn't make me trap my own coon.
and if you are wondering why I have such a skunk issue, well back about 9 years ago I took my little Redbone/Bassett hound Mattie out coon hunting in a corn field and out comes this rabid skunk running right at me!! I had never ran so fast in my life!! Mattie ended up killing it and boy let me tell you she stunk for days. I am not affraid of lions, bears, or anything else, but after that incident I am terrified of skunks.

Damn it, where were all the girls like you back when I was dating? my wife won't cook or catch a coon for me, much less would she ever pet one of my hounds or get in my truck when they are loaded in the dog box. matter of fact she won't even ride in my truck.
If I could trade caged coons for household favors like that, we'de be up to our ears in coons.

I'd be carefull, I'd imagine she can operate a comupter and can read. You'll be up to your ears in other stuff if she does!!!

She is definately smart enough to bust me, but no worries. she hates hunting and hounds so much that she would never get on here!

Now, that sounds like my wife. Just kidding, If the hounds are quiet, she likes them but the 6 AM wake up call is definately unappreciated. She wonders why I really don't want her to take up shooting sports!

Re: Making a lion hound without any help
Thanks Buddy for cleaning it up for me so I can continue to post Bella's progress on here for those who don't use Facebook
Hopefully I can get Bella out tomorrow. They tuned up my Rhino so now I am ready to rock and roll and not worry about it breaking down.
My son brought over some of my stuff he had of mine in storage. brought me my old reliable hunting pack and some camping and fishing gear.
I am happy.

Teesa,
I watched all of those videos. How far out is Bella getting from you? Is she staying right there with you, is she venturing farther out and checking back, what is she doing now that you've had her out a few times? Also, is she keeping her nose in the dirt?

Re: Making a lion hound without any help
Benny,
I just sent you a PM about her progress the same time you posted this.
This is what I wrote.
I hope to get Bella out after work. She is really doing well. I have been free casting her as I hunt and train all my dogs that way. She is gaining confidence and ranging out a lot more. I have been calling her back and clucking her on treats to get her sticking her nose in the ground where I point. Only takes one time with anything and she figures it out. Super smart hound. She can get a little hard headed, but being as I do not have a training collar on her she is a real dream to train. Still got to get her on some game, but I am working on that. I am like you I want a dog to handle and know the basics, which she does. So we are on to the next step. Catching some game for her to play with. I really love her to death and am so happy you let me have her.
