The leaves have turned top gold in the high country

I guess I am just an old fool but when the leaves turn to gold I get giddy.

Oh it's not so much that summers gone, but now it's time to chase a kitty.

Yep, not problem lions in campgrounds where tourists go to lounge

It's time to get up high and wild and see who's been around.

Horses are ready and tacks in shape,and trailer's hooked to the truck

We will load and haul to a jump off place and saddle up and test our luck

Heard a toms been making this range and scraping along the rims

Got some spotted rascals full vim and vigor that are wanting to talk to him

So if you see a silloutte up high on the hill, just a man on a horse with his hounds

It's just old Mike on Gus with all the kids just out rimming and making their rounds.


You all have a wonderful lion season, and save some for seed cuz dead lions don't make tracks and you need tracks to make lion hounds.

Nothing like the color of gold, orange and green shimmering in a quaken aspen stand......that is unless it's a nice tom lion in the tree!


It is that time of year again Mike, and ol' Ike is having a hard time staying off the mountain. I speak to people and they say there is enough orange on the hill to make a person think someone planted a pumpkin patch, but odds are they are elk hunters looking to slay the mighty wapiti. It's one of the most beautiful times of year, with the aspen stands of gold, the early morning frost on the meadows, that brisk, cool air in a man's face, and yes the bull elk singing their challenges back and forth as they look to propagate their species. And amidst that beauty and grandeur the houndman sits in wait for his turn in the woods....

Think I'll load hounds in the morning since I still have an unpunched lion tag in my pocket...............

Well said Mike, I'm with Eric, heck of a blizzard last night woke up to 5 inches of the fresh stuff this morning, The Boys where pretty excited this morning at feeding time. Elk season was over last week.

My fall started at the end of Aug up above the arctic circle. When I arrived, the leaves were already turning and feel within two weeks. When I got back to Anchorage a month later, the leaves there were yellow. Now here in CO., they are at their prime and the high country is already white. We hunted goats last week in fresh snow. The dogs seem to know its getting close as they are all standing at the fence watching me every morning. Another month and we're on here in CO. Hope everyone has a great season.

Yes, autumn does come early to the high and north country. I well remember trips I made to the last frontier, or the north slope of Alaska. To walk in that land, with the rock solid underfoot, the clear blue skies, the snow capped peaks around you, the silence, and the thought of knowing few if any are even on the same mountain is a humbling experience. What a vast and wonderful land we have at our disposal.

Autumn is truly spectacular!

In my opinion the fall colors are matched by no other. An aspen grove in a high mountain draw, with their flaming yellow leaves accented by dark green conifers or the brilliant foliage of the oaks scattered among the Jack Pines. The only thing that I think might compare is the hardwood forest of the eastern seaboard and the upper north east, although I have not seen it with my own eyes.

It's puppy training time, it's funny how a little moisture can make a hard track look easy for the veterans and give those young dogs an opportunity to show their stuff. Put that hat down tight and expect to use those spurs. For you walkers, you better have a good set of running shoes!

Even though stepping out on an old cold dirt track is by far the best thing, it's sure nice to put some distance on a track without killing the dogs and one's self.

Get those hounds out, good luck and good hunting.
