Florida Big Game - Swamp Posh Kennels

Post by swampposh »

Hi my name is Richard and I run hounds for big game here in South Florida as well as in North Carolina. I hunt mainly hounds but also have some cur dogs.

I have a big bluetick female (no papers but many think its a cameron dog) that is a finished dog on bear and hogs. She also has the knack to tree a bob cat once in a while. She has a good nose and can take an older track, but she is best at winding off of the buggy/truck. She doesn't bark as much on hogs as she does on bear. She has a lot of bottom and has been known to run a race for 24 hours. We call her Chigger, and it is no winder why as she stays with the game barking every breath. She has gotten way less gritty in her old age, and bears some good scars from some nasty trophy hogs back in her younger days on the central Florida game ranch where she cut her teeth.

I also have a male english redtick that is a finished bear and hog dog. Pete never barks on the track on hog, and only bays when he is looking at them. He has a good nose, but he likes a hotter track. Pete has hunted through 5 E. North Carolina bear seasons and has survived some big bears that killed other dogs. He bays pretty tight and is not afraid to pull hair and ears, but he knows when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. Pete also has major bottom and wont quit game unless he is called off.

I have a female english redtick, Santanna, that is a finished on bears and hogs. She is my brood gyp. She hunts real good, trees real hard, and is very gritty. She has been crossed with 2 different english males (Pete above and another stud) and both litters have turned out great hounds. I don't hunt her much on a fear of her grit maybe her end. She raises too good of litters to loose her.

I lost one of her sons Carlos, who was an outstanding young hound to a bad boar hog with pseudorabies last year. This young hound of hers got cut every time he went to catching, and caught some big hogs in the 6 months he was hunted every day. He would do it all by himself if the opportunity presented itself which is a trait of this line of english dogs. The ones that are that gritty often don't last long, but they are what you want holding on when you are trying to tie up a big hog.

I also have a male english that is off of Santanna. He is a well started coon dog and will be finished training this year. He has a booming voice and is real agressive on coon. I may turn him onto bear this year.

Last but not least is Jackie, my Black Mouth Cur. Jackie is a FBMCBO registered from the Weatherford's Ben line of hog and cow dogs. Jackie is started on boar and is going to be turned onto bear this year after a few more weeks of traning on some big hogs in some tough country.

I am excited for this hunting season, and am interested in networking with other dog hunters.
