COONHOUND BLOODLINES BIG GAME ISSUE

Post by Brady Davis »

Not sure who all on here gets Coonhound Bloodlines, UKCs mag. In any case, I just got my big game issue and Laura Bell did an awesome article on Jeff Alan and Steve Phipps. Which, Laura, you write really well!

Other than that there wasn't anything on big game hunting. If that one article is their idea of a Big game issue then they have missed the boat. I realize that they focus primarily on east coast coon hunts but good heavens....All the BG hounds UKC registered and that one article is what they do? All in all, other than Lauras article, I was sorely dissapointed!

Brady Davis ~ All they can put in the magazine is what's sent to them. They can't just manufacture articles.

...well you'd think they'd dig a little deeper for a "big game" issue

My advice is this. Call ukc and ask for todd kellam and he will talk to you. He always wants opinions for the books! I haven't recieved mine yet but done heard it was a joke. Gotta figure don't have room for anything alse when every joe blow out there wants you to come breed to there dog due to a picture!

Good stuff...LT, I do remember "coonhound" bloodlines, but, every big game hound, or at least 99% of it has coonhound blood in it  ...I do, however, hear there are some white hounds that are pretty jam up and they don't have much for coon blood in them

In any case, I'm thinkin when my subscription runs out, I'll not renew. We'll see....

Brady, your white hounds aren't the only ones that have little to no coonhound.

Plotts?
Walkers?

The difference is, none of those white hounds have ever seen a coon...ever.

I have to ask you does it matter what breed it is?

The only time I have ever heard anyone say that their dogs have no coondog blood in them is someone trying to sell something. Most of the time those people are also bragging on the hard work of others as well.

Really disappointed to see just one article, I'm a coon hunter mostly, but there's lots of Bear hunters here in the east. Thought maybe they'd give some recognition to the Big game nationals or something.

If bred right, then everyone benefits from the breeders before them. Dogs are just far too old of a breed, for it to be any other way.

Take the Cameron hounds for an example. Del benefitted from the works of J.J.Henneman, J.J. benefitted from Vaughn...and so on.

From what I have seen, the straight Biggame hound bred dogs that have never seen a coon tend to:

1. Have more endurance - I mean on a 15 mile one way race
2. Are more athletic
3. Tree longer

These three traits alone are distinct requirements of a real biggame hound.
There are strains and breeds out there that can claim this, and out here in this country the difference is easy to see.

Just a salesmans tactic? No sir ... not by a long shot.

Give me straight biggame bred every time.

And I am sure others will second that.

The differences show themselves very quick in a long hard mountainous race don't they....Agreed LT
