Garmin Astro Maps

Post by Daniel Tremblay »

Well, my wife bought me the astro for christmas. My question is, there aren't any maps up loaded on it. So how do I go about getting maps of my hunting areas on it?

Talk with Buddyw, Im sure he could sell you some. You can get preloaded cards that you can buy or get the software and upload them onto your garmin yourself. If your not really good on a computer talk to Buddyw (the site owner), he will help you out Im sure. Good luck

You can either buy the Garmin Topo US and down load whatever area that you are hunting or go to miscjunk.org and download their map for free. Before any of this can happen, you must buy a microSD card and put it in your astro. It goes under the batteries. You don't need a 4 gig or anything like that, a 526 meg or 1 gig would be plenty.

Hope this helps....

The trip and waypoint software is a management tool. It allows you to save, export, and import. Waypoints, tracks, and trips you have made on the garmin. So that when you create them they will not get lost. Also if a someone comes to hunt with you. Then you can load those tracks and waypoints to their Garmin. An example of tracks would be a trail/road that is not on the topo map. You save it so it appears on the map.

As for the maps. As a dealer I cannot condone breaking the federal copyright laws. So I cannot tell you how to get illegal copies of the software. Not worth the fines I could get by publicly advertising or selling such illegal copies of the software, or chips made from software that I own. There are a bunch of guys that do advertise doing so. So be it. Their lives may not be worth the $20-30 they ask for a illegal copy. You can buya chip from Garmin that has your area on it. You can also buy the topo USA 2008 which has all the US on it and make your own chips as needed. I believe that there is also a 20k version for the NW now. That is more detail than the standard US 100k version. I would have to double check that to be sure.

Really it is the topo maps that make the Garmin such a usefull tool.

What's the difference between the 100k and 20k maps? Does anyone have or seen both?

Yes, I use both. Well, I actually only use the 20k and have the 100k for some unknown reason. The topo lines are on a closer intervol is basically the difference.
