Update On Oregon Cougar Plan

Oregon's hound-hunters must wait until December to learn what requirements they must satisfy to act as state agents and hunt bears and cougars with hounds.

The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission this afternoon delayed until Dec. 7 its decision on setting out rules for houndsmen agents working on behalf of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on bear and cougar management.

That work could include the chasing, treeing and killing of bears and cougars causing human-safety problems or livestock or pet damage.

During the commission's meeting today in Salem, wildlife advocates and hunting organizations both asked the commission for more time to review draft requirements.

The commission agreed.

The draft rules are the ODFW's attempt to implement a law passed this year by the Oregon Legislature meant to clarify how the ODFW operates under hound-hunting restrictions passed by voters in 1994 and reaffirmed in 1996.

To work for free on the department's behalf, houndsmen must be well-equipped and experienced, have clean criminal records and no drug or alcohol convictions and break no wildlife laws, according to the draft.

I don't know of anyone... Who is going to admit to the state that their dogs run lion and bear and come up with an explanation as to why

thats what i was thinkin. whos gonna go to them and say yeah my hounds are the best bear lion hounds around

i am pretty sure odfw is gonna go "really" and how'd you get them like that

I don't know how someone could volunteer and then not be under scrutiny when hunting on their own time.. It's not legal to do when you are on your own time but it is okay when ODFW say it is? How are the dogs supposed to know the difference.. Are you supposed to not hunt unless you are on a depredation?? No thank you.. Sounds like a recipe for a whole lot of headache...

I know of one person around the woodburn

area that is going to get on as fast as they pass the application. He has been waiting for this day for a long time. I dont think he can pass what ODF&W needs thou. He does not have enough time on game or has never done any work for ODF&W. We will see. I know another person that said he would like to try. He has owned ONE dog now for about 9 months and thinks he is going to be an agent. Some people.

Thanks for the update Nora, we appreciate it. You'd be surprised how many guys around here will offer up their hounds when season is closed and they can't run a bear. There was one guy that had hounds hunting the Book Cliffs this fall and three or four hounddoggers followed him out there (since pursuit was closed on bear) and offered their services, gas money and time for free--go figure?

I have ran down problem bears in my state for DWR for six or eight years and never received a penny for it. I've always done that out of my pocket because none of them have hounds or the capability to catch them unless they crawl into their trap. I always figured it was GOOD PR for us hunters. I also figure if I don't go run that bear down and kill it some kid in a campground might end up dead or chewed on.....so that always helped when I think I'm just giving my time away.

I've loaded dogs and driven as far as three hours to do the job, and always stayed and sleep in my truck until the bear was done. Recently, a DWr employee explained he wished they had a avenue to pay me for my work. I told him not to worry about it, if I couldn't afford to spend the time and money I wouldn't offer to do the job.....................

I hope some of you that are capable of doing the job will help them out when the time comes, cause it isn't their fault you lost hound hunting.

A bear in a state trap that was coming into a boy scout camp a couple years back. He walked into their trap just minutes before I arrived with the hounds, darn the luck!

I know it's not there fault that we had our hound hunting taken away.. But, I do think if this plan works, there is no chance in hell we would ever get it back.. And odds are slim to none anyways... But this plans works and we can kiss that slim chance bye bye

Well, if that's the case then I wouldn't help them run down a killer bear...................sounds like you guys and gals better hold out for the whole pie and not just a slice of it!

It's easy for me to donate time and money with a good attitude because we have a year round lion season and spring and summer bear pursuit. No doubt I'd not be so generous if I couldn't drop a dog anytime I wanted.

You guys are crazy if you think that there aren't people who are very well qualified that will do this. Its about them. I lived in Washington and its the same everywhere. There will be a few guys who will do it and theres nothing you can do about it. Its just what the state wants. Controlled hunting of predators.

I MYSELF THINK THAT HUNTING FOR THE STATE ON PERMITS OR WHAT EVER IS'NT GOING TO HELP THE HOUNDSMAN OF THE STATE GET THERE HUNTING RIGHTS BACK FACT IS IT WILL DO JUST THE OPPISATE. THE STATE IS STILL GOING TO HIRE GOVERMENT HUNTERS AND TRAPPERS , IT WILL ONLY TELL THEM THAT THERE SYSTEM WORKS AND THEY WILL RECIEVE ALL THE CREDIT.. AND THERE FOR NO CHANGE IS NEEEDED.... I have known Larry for some time now. Many years to tell you the truth. He does not want to get into it as much as you think he does. He has had his time and gave his years. He is still a world of knowledge and has and will continue to helped out. Thank you for your words you are correct.

What a great picture. I did some bear damage stuff a few years ago. I think that bears are awesome looking animals.

I do not see this plan working. There are only three magor targeted areas in Oregon. I for some reason think that there are alot more cats in Oregon them just those three areas. Could be wrong thou. Once the general puplic knows that they can call ODF&W when a cat kills live stock and will get some one out to take care of it ODF&W will be getting alot more calls then they can handle. We have about three people a year call us for lions that have killed live stock and we can not do anything about it. Once ODF&W can do something about it and people know this. There phons will not stop ringing.

I post stuff onto this site for the general puplic to know what is going on.

Please do not turn this post into a fight like all the rest have been.

PLAINS ABOUT A MILE RIGHT UP PUMKIN RIDGE ALL THE WAY OVER TO GREEN MT., DAIREY CREEK AND TO COAL CREEK USE TO BE LOTS OF BOBCAT AND COON THERE ....FRIEND IN SPORT.......TOM WINGFIELD

I live 5.3 miles up Dairy creek. Grew up here and tend on staying around this area. My grandpas family home steded (spell) most all of Mountaindale. You would not notice it now. Pumpkin ridge is now full of $1+million houses. People with big money

live up there to have the view.

We lived on Dixie Mt for a few months and it was OK hunting. Still alot of new homes. We have a friend that ouns most of the upper part of Dixie Mt that is into X-mass trees. We have seen alot of Bobcats there.

My husband and I still get a bit of Bobs out of the area but mostly on Green Mt side. There are way to many houses between us and the ridge now.
