Not trash here

Post by Caincando1 »

Here in south east MN we don't have bear, cats or hogs so Coyotes are be biggest game to run. We only run yotes and consider fox trash here and break our dogs to not run fox.

We run mostly open crop land like the picture below.

Yep I have a band of misfits.  My dad has two more trail hounds that make up our pack but they didn't get in the first picture. The little black dog is a Patterdale and he loves chasing yotes but doesn't like the cold too much so he rides in the truck a lot. He's a good bayer so he hasn't gotten eaten by a coyote yet. He's got his head squashed a few times but nothting that slowed him down. The brindle dog is a lurcher and she hangs out in the truck till the trail hounds get one close to a road then we send her in.

We’re daytime hunters. We go out at first light and drive around sections (mostly 1x1’s) looking for tracks from the night before. When we find the tracks we’ll look them over and see if they are worth running. Then we’ll dump a cold nose dog or two and let them work the track. When the coyote is jumped we’ll add more hot nose dogs or pups if need be. We have guys in trucks with radios so we can keep track of the dogs and coyotes. We usually run to catch and that can take a while. We don’t have any dogs that can just run a yote down in a foot race. They have to tire them out and gang up on them. There are guys around that run to shoot too.

He's seen the inside of a Coyotes mouth a few time and has the scars to prove it. I was pretty nervous about letting him loose with yotes. That's why we started him in a pen so we could assist if the situation got out of control. He's not supper gritty like a lot of Patterdale's and is more of a bayer and mixer. He'll just face bark and weave and bob to avoid the teeth. He'll get some fur when the big dog are there to help.
