Question for Utah Guys
Can someone point me in the direction to get decent dog food for a decent price in bulk. I've fed Black Gold in the past and currently feed High Standard, but it's just too much money. If you have some suggestions would you please give me the price and where to get it. Thanks

I'll tell you this, if Hi Standard is too expensive then get rid of some of your dogs. i see guys who feed crap food and it is not good at all for your hounds. Feed less dogs and keep feeding the Hi Standard. Thats about as cheap as you can get for a decent quality feed...thats what I feed and I wouldnt go any less on quality!

Re: Question for Utah Guys
I'm sure there are other dog foods that are 26/18 or close to it that don't cost $26 a bag. Just trying to find out if there's something out there that might be a little cheaper or somewhere to get Hi Standard cheaper. Don't think I'll be getting rid of good dogs over a few dollars just looking to save some money. Had a friend tell me he gets it about an hour and a half away from where I live for $22. If something else doesn't turn up that is the direction I'll go. I appreciate your opinions and info.

10-4!
So listen, I have done a lot of looking into this topic and somewhere along the line you have be willing to pay little to get the best for the money, not the cheapest. If your just trying to keep your dog's big guts from eating its little guts then go ahead and feed whatever (most vets will tell you that Old Roy(for example) is some of the worst feed a dog can eat). You are what you eat. So then what is your dog if you feed it low quality crap? Just some food for thought.

I've been feeding Enhance from IFA, I'm sure they'd give you a bulk rate but I don't know if it would be cheaper than the other two. It is a great feed though...I feed the Pro Athlete.

Re: Question for Utah Guys
I buy 2000 lbs at a time and am paying around $20 for $50 of top quality feed. Heres some suggestions. Find your local distributor, not your local feed store. If your buying in bulk, you should be able to find a distributor to buy from. If you have to, go get a business license for a kennel (usually around $5-$10 a year) to give to the distributor so you can buy it wholesale.
Also, don't just feed your dogs one type of dry food. Mix two or three types together and then always add meat to your dogs food. Meat is FREE just for the asking whether its old freezer burned meat from all your buddies, road kill or just go shoot an extra deer or elk each year. Grind it all up and start feeding them and you'll see how much better your dogs are in 6 months.
If your reasoning for feeding the cheapest crap you can buy is "I've been feeding this for years and my dogs are alive" then you need to educate yourself. Yes, your dogs will live on it but they will not be as healthy, live as long and be in top physical shape as a dog being feed a good MEAT based food.

yes i give my dogs alote of meat with the old roy and my hounds live to be 10 to 14 yrs old i dont think a hound is expected to live longer then that and to me they are in pretty good shape butt i will chang food 4 a few months and see if it makes a difference butt i worked at a place when i was younger that made dog food dog treats and i was told alot of the vitamins and other healthy stuff in the food is cooked out they ad it and in the proces of making it most of the good stuff that is wrote on the back of the bag was put in butt now it is cooked out just what i was told by some one who makes it
Re: Question for Utah Guys
I have fed my dogs ol roy for 15 years. I feed the brown bag, High energy and I spend alot of time chaseing my hounds and all I can say is if you think 5 or 10 dollars a bag more makes it better food then lets hunt these dogs side to side for about 1 week straight. Every day and we will see. All the meat scraps just make them wormy anyways. I know the protien counts but my dogs do fine on ol Roy and I will hunt them with anyone. And I have dogs that are 12 years old that will keep up with the best of them.

Just curious if you have ever fed anything else long enough to have results to compare with on your own dogs. I also fed ol roy for the lifetime of a few dog (12+ yrs) and didn't have anything to complain about until I fed something I consider better feed and saw many positive results on the dogs I have now. Case may be you have good dogs that could be better on better feed. JMOs

Re: Question for Utah Guys
cold track,
I live in a very rural area myself so it does not pay to purchase dog food at my local feed store where a 40# bag of mid grade dog food is $25 so I drive 2hr and buy 5 /50# bags of Dimond Hi energy 24/20 at $24 a bag now you can say that I haven't saved much money but I gained 10 LBS of feed per bag and cut my feed back by two cups per day per dog so for you o roy feeder do the math who is paying out more money. Drive the 1 1/2 and buy several bag at a time and keep track of your costs I bet you will find that you will save money and your dogs will be healthier.

Re: Question for Utah Guys
Cold track, i would agree with sourdough, diamond is the best dogfood that i have fed. It might cost a little more but you get more out of it.
I currently feed hi standard because it is convenient for us. We get it for 25.00 a bag for the maroonish purple bag. We also feed as much scraps as the dogs will eat in the winter time. The guy we get our dogfood from has an off brand that is 26/18 and sells it for 20.00 50lb bag. I haven't tried it, but if you are interested give me a call and i'll give you his number. You can also get a better price if you buy it by the pallet but i never have enough money to do that.
Old roy down at wally world here is 27.00 a bag for the brown bag. I like the hi standard for 25.00 and i think that it is a better quality dogfood. But im an idiot so take that for what its worth.
