The buckskin deal has always been a source of aggrivation to me. I spent many hours visiting with Clyde Neader who in my opinion was one of the greatest authorities on the plott breed, and he had spent time withe the likes of Vaughn Plott Taylor Crockett, and others who were formative in the breed charter. Each of them was convinced that the buckskin was just a color phase of some of the strains of the plotss. Be they Vaughn Plotts, John Plotts, Ferguson Plotts or whatever. Some claimed redbone was infused in them others said somthing else and Clyde said to the true plott breeders this was hogwash, they didn't want anything in their plotts but trail, tree and tons of grit.

I spent a good deal of time visiting with many plott breeders over the years. Some may not know this but I have always been a fan of the breed and respected the majority of the early breeders and their commitment to qualities that make up a big game hound. I have owned some very good plotts and when I was bear hunting more I relied on them a lot. I have also had and seen some very good cat hounds with in the breed. My best rough swamp cold weather deep mud, black water bad to the bone coon dog was also a plott. I enjoyed conversations with famous western plott breeders and hunters of the past like Willis Butolph, Olen Greer, Gordon Pace, and I never heard one of them put the buckskin color down. I have heard more of the competition coon dog plott breeders knock the buckskin color than anybody. Hmmm? always made me wonder. Anyway Leroy Haug ( Mr. Swampland Plott himslef) sure won't cull a buckskin and I don't think anybody would say Leroy doesn't have a clue what a plott should be.

The only difference I've been able to see, is a difference in the percentage of Buckskin culls. I have yet to hear of more than a handfull. We currently own three, and will keep them all, and have bred two, the other is a fixed female, or I would breed her also.

Like evry one said a dog dont know what color he/she is. I will say this I have a few buckskin dogs and there great but so are my brindle dogs. I do like the color though, I had one guy last year went around tellin folks that I was breeding yellow lab into my hounds thats how I got that color, he told everyone that plotts dont come in that color. Shows how much he knew LOL. Does any body know if that buckskin gene is the domanent or ressive. I am lookin for a buckskin gyp to put one of my males over. I wanna see how many buckskin pups I'll get.
