More Lion BS in CA

Post by Peter Meyer »

Just heard a report over my scanner, 4 p.m. Easter Sunday, of a lion, fifty yards behind someone's residence in the Georgetown/Wentworth Springs rd. area. Guess what? According to the sherriff's dispatch there are currently no (0) game wardens on duty. I'm sure that somewhere in California there are wardens on duty. I have heard some of their calls. freqs. 151.415, 151.430, 159.435, 159.420 today. So the sherriff is going out to the scene. Maybe the cat will still be there. The weather is very windy with steady rain turning to snow around 3000 ft. this afternoon. Now what? I ain't doing nothing this afternoon. I'd be glad to handle it. I can be loaded up and in Georgetown in an hour. But nooooo. Not in CA, home of protected cats and stupid voters. Happy Easter and God bless our troops, especially the snipers. -Pete Meyer

I'd go chase the bastards anyway!! fu!.... all those tree huggin scum bags! how can they prove that you weren't just out chasin coon or hog and dogs trashed onto a lion? California is almost the only place lion attacks ever happen. How many have to happen before they realize it's time to manage the lions out there? not to mention the bankrupt state could use the extra revinue. can I get an amen?

Not sure how it is now but right after 117 passed, all we had to do was make a phone call to the local warden and he had a depridation permit waiting for us anytime we wanted one. He would leave it in his mailbox and we would go by and pick it up on our way up to the ranches we hunted. He was glad we were going out after them. You need to find a warden that will issue you a permit.

If guy's would tell them where to put the depridation permit(where the sun don't shine ) when they call. one day we might get to hunt them again. but right now with guys willing to go and take care of a Lion all you are doing is keeping it from become a big problem that only a season would fix. they don't have but 4 or 5 trapers with dogs in calif. and most of them can only run off a kill.

There is zero chance you will ever get lion hunting back in CA. Doesn't matter how many people are getting chewed on. CA already has one of the highest rate of human/lion encounters.
Once you understand the process of how you would have to go about getting a season back, you'll understand why it will never happen. You have three ways to chase lions right now in CA. and they will never change. One, chase them illegally. Two, get hired by USDA, and three, find a warden that is simpathethetic to your cause and get yourself a depridation permit.

Ask the rifleman. He seems to think you bury your head in the sand and everything will just go away . I f these people would write and call there politicians and try to get them to change there laws it might help . But some i don,t mean all but some would rather get on the forums and bitch about the way there fellow houndsman hunt then to try to regain there hunting privleges.Right rifleman ? Just google in antihunting groups and see some of the stuff they get in trouble for . Maybe this will give you some ammo .Rick Brocious

Twenty minutes after the initial call on the scanner I heard the sherriff arrive at the residence. He reported over the scanner "Lion is DOA, 10-98 (assignment completed)" Who shot it? Were they or some livestock in "imminent danger"? Will they get a depredation permit after the fact? Have they contacted Fish and Game? I'll follow up and let the board know. See you at the HSUS rally in Sacramento on the 8th, I've got some awesome fliers to hand out. -Pete Meyer
