New guy..need help..

Post by PineRidge »

ve got a couple plott/walker mix hounds.the parent are proven coyote/bear dogs and I am looking to train mine on coyotes.I dont have a running pen around here or really even anyone to run with. The pups are four months old and full of energy right now.At about how old should I start training them and what is the best method?I showed them a coyote pelt and they just kind of sniffed it and howled and backed away.I tried dragging it around but they only wanted to chase me and not the pelt. What should I do as far as starting my training?thankS!

If you don't have access to a yote or fox pen, I'd think about picking up a broke, 100% straight older slower pup trainer and cut the pups in on started chases. Others may disagree, but I think you need to wait a few months before you start those pups. They're not ready physically or mentally to run a race or come face to face with a yote. Between now and the fall, work on hauling them around in the box, break them off deer and get a good handle on them. By the time the snow flies, they'll be ready to go and you can put them down on good tracks you can identify. JMO Good Luck.

pm one of the yote guys on here and strike a conversation up. but do wait people tell all these stories of half grown pups hunting full grown game and it makes you wonder. how would a twelve year old boy fare trying to whip your ass? coyote hounds can be picked up real reasonable in some areas. contact a club and look at finished hounds. make sure you hunt them exactly as you plan on hunting and alone. get in the hunt and watch that hound doing the job and make sure it not running a whodoo like some pack dogs can do. then strike a deal. that will put you way ahead. second option wait till pups are showing game and body size with the endurance to go with it and start live trapping coyotes and turn a few loose. some areas this is illegal so check . good luck
