Two Quick Questions

I took my my young dog hunting last night with my oldest dog and another guy and 2 of his dogs. We had a good night for the most part but 2 things happend that bothered me and I wanted some peoples opinions.

1. We pulled up in a field with a buck deer in it when we turned out and none of the dogs offered to run it then we killed 2 coons and moved to another part of the farm. As soon as we turned out at the second drop my 1 year old and my buddys old walker hit a deer and smoked it for about 10-15 minutes and quit and came back by themselves. Also on our third drop we killed another good sized coon. My question is why after just killing 2 coons and them not offering to run the first deer would they run this deer that was a colder track, and should I be worried about the young dog?

2. My old female which has never offered to growl at another dog tried to kill my young female when I put them on a double snap. I was very shocked because my old dog is 9 and has never in her life fought a dog or even acted Ill, could it be she is just getting old and senile or do you think she is jealous of the new addition?

I appreciate any input as I am a young hunter and have really high hopes for my young female as a coon and bear dog both and want to do whatever I can to make her a better dog.

My opinions... and they don't mean a darn thing

I have seen dogs that are not broke, rig something good.. run a hell of a race.. have it killed out to them.. get put back up on the box and are so juiced they hit the first thing you come by.. a deer in some cases.. could be that the dogs were still pumped about the coon and grabbed the first track they came across.. ran it... knew better and quit.... I would do a litter reminder, if they are supposed to be broke, that we don't chase deer..

As for your old dog.. I would guess she probably is wanting the younger dog to know who is alpha bitch... I would do a bit of butt kicking if and when needed on the dogs to let them know you are alpha and you don't tolerate that kind of behavior.

I have seen dogs that "Will not" run deer 10 months out of the year, then breakover when deer are in rut ( NOV/DEC) This may sound silly to you, but I Guarentee this to be the truth!!!!! Seen it to many times!!!!

Far as the old female.......very well could be jelousy!!!!! Listen to ladycathunter.......she knows her stuff!!!!!!

Those two replies are on the money. We usually have a few deer races and everytime it seems it's a white-tail buck in the rut.

Bear season we had a box full of dogs staring at two bucks 15 yards from the road not a PEEP. dogs on the box layed down. went on rigged treed and killed a bear. on the way out, two young dogs blew up about 10 seconds after 2 does crossed the road in front of us put em down and did a little refresher course on right and wrong.

Thank you for the replies. I wouldn't really call my dog broke off of deer because she had never offered to bother them before last night. I am just hoping that as I continue to show her coons and bears that she will realize that those are the only animals that she is supposed to mess with. Also I did do a lot of "disciplining" on the the dog when she got ill and when I got home she was rubbing up against the young dog and licking her in the face so hopefully she got the message.
