how do you break a gun shy dog?
i got a young dog and she does everything good just gets scared and scatters as soon as a shot is fired
take it easy and have a good time.

go to the local shooting spot and play w/ her about 4-500 yds behind the firing line (further if she won't ignore it that close). slowly work your way toward the line about 10-15 yds at a time upto about 100 yds a visit. NEVER push her closer than she wants to go. eventually you'll be able to play w/ her right up on the line noise & all. be patient. chances are some dipthong made her shy by shooting over her while very young instead of slowly introducing the sound. the surest way to make a pup gunshy is to "test" it by shooting right over it. although this has been common knowledge for a good century idiots do it ALL the freaking time.

When you go out to feed, bang all the pots and pans you can, and then if you can bring a 22 and shoot that a bit, that might work too.
Pops,
Thats a good idea.

I had one dog like that, the way I fixed it was to sit with her and pat her when the lion or bear was shot.It only took a few animals and she was fine.

Hillbilly, that works for me, too. If you coon hunt hold and pet her near where the coon will fall. Have the shooter as far away as possible. When the coon hits the ground turn her loose preferably with another dog(s).

I've bought a few dogs that were bad gun shy so i bought a cap gun that uses 209 primers and every nite before i feed them i'd shoot about 8 times as i walk out to the kennels after several weeks most dogs won't care any more at least they'l hang together even if they don't realy like it good luck

my experiance with this has been, after they see some critters fall out and get to chew on them they associate the bang with fun. it kinda just cures itself. just got to keep em tied when you shoot and make sure it sees the game come out of the tree.good luck, jared.

buy a new dog or trade it. I've seen gun shy dogs that will never change. trust me. don't waste your time. the dog will always be gun shy.

If your coon hunting with the dog switch to CB caps for a while, they make hardly any noise when fired.
