Don't know what is legal in florida, but I'd still probably try to buy two guns even if I only had $500. ruger 10/22 comes to mind for the small side. Lots of deer have died to a 22, but it leaves little or no blood trail and florida is thick and wet so you might need more blood to trail. A .223 might be a one gun consideration because you could headshoot the coons with full metal jackets and use lead core for deer. Deer are smallish in Florida so that should be enough gun. Also, military rounds for 223 are cheap and available. You can also buy cheap single shot riffles with exchangable caliber barrels. Some even have a shotgun barrel option.

unless the laws have changed since i lived there it is illeagle to use a 22 cal weapon in florida for deer, rimfire or centerfire, which really makes no since, we can use 22 cal. centerfires here in idaho and our deer are a hell of a lot bigger. for a cheap, very accurate and dependible rifle i would go buy a new savage 110 with the accutrigger in a 243. my dad has one and so does my brother, both in 30-06, they are unbelievably accurate. i have always had remingtons, rugers, and brownings, but after personally seeing those savages shoot and shooting them i dont think for the money you can beat them. as far as accuracy goes i dont know if there is a factory rifle out there that is any better regaurdless of the price. you can buy the combo, with the scope, rings, and bases for well under $500 new!

if i was going to buy a shot gun, i think i would go with a remington 870 in 12 gauge. they have been arround for ever, deffinitly proven to be a reliable gun. you can get them cheap, and they make countless different accessories for it, you can configure it for any purpose you might have in mind. i believe the last one i looked at, at wal-mart in clarkston wa. had laminated stocks and it was under $300, brand new!

i agree the 870 has deffinantly been a proven gun over the years.that and a 22 mag of some kind or other and you could kill anything in america and still be under 500 bucks.
