guys and gals...
here is a run down of the first meeting with odfw. bird dog hunters were well represented and lots of complaining for two full hours. concession after concession was asked for and looked very favorably these guys will get some pretty liberal training compared to oregon hound hunters. what the bird doggers asked for was having the commission allow more than the proposed three live birds per hunter to train with. these guys threw a fit and demanded odfw allow unlimited numbers of birds and how dare the commission.....ron anglin was present and we had a good discussion ( very civil) and one on one prior to the meeting. we will be working together to resolve our differences. one thing the commission did say was bird nesting is gone and if the oregon legislature can shore things up by march it will be law for this coming new year. the second thing coming is a cougar pilot program.but.....
here is the kicker....we would only be allowed to exercise our hounds on a gravel road and not train.....odfw agreed with the bird doggers it is very crucial to train bird dogs on real live game birds year around for the benefit of the dog....brandon r and ronald a. from the commission and several others are bird dog people so you know the bias...
my proposal was simple.....how could the commission allow liberal training for bird dogs and restrict hounds???? i made it clear to the commission i don't field trial nor do i use dead animals like the bird dog folks....i use the real deal or nothing. no drags, no barn lions... nothing....they are willing to adopt training for bird dogs and pass up the hound hunter and the training of his or her hounds.... not going to fly!
here is what you can do.....on the odfw web site there is a link for the public comment form. fill it out and please be very direct to the point....we would like equal consideration to hunt/ train our hounds equal to the bird dog world.what is good enough for one group should be good enough for all. until they have your input in hand we will get what they give us.
ron anglin says no one is challenging the proposals...you have a problem linking up to odfw and loading the comment form give me a p.m and i will send you a form by mail. my other proposal for the cougar pilot program was to allow liberal tags to be issued and also set game management unit quotas like the state of montana. this way every one has an equal chance to hunt cougar and even if you can't bare ground you can hunt against those that can...snow bounders can hop over the mountain
washington screwed up by limiting the tags and this really makes for tough times to draw a tag if i have it straight. this would even the playing field. not to mention place enough qualified can do hound hunters to harvest the objective quotas. jmo

Mike,
Does the lion hunting require a state vote to be a go? And what about bear?

Re: results from the first odfw meeting in springfield
jimmy.
it is what it is because not a single dog hunter attended last nights meeting. not only are the commission guys bird dog enthusiast but they were met with a whole bunch more who defended there rights. we did not. i was the only hound hunter at the meeting.
sean, the oregon state legislature signed h.b. 2971 into law a few years ago. this would allow hound hunters to work with odfw to do cougar removals. volunteering or paid positions pretty well divided the hound hunting community. bear are totally off limits except under terms of depredation on private land. the only determining factor to change this would probably be the will of the oregon voter so forget liberal oregon.
i let the bird doggers implicate them selves fairly deep with all there training programs across oregon during the months of april- july with no permits issued by the department and at the end of the meeting i was quick to point out an oregon state police officer sitting in the meeting who all in the same breath caught my hounds as much as taking a shit on a gravel road would have been issued a citation for bird nesting rule violation all the while these guys are the ones who own "BIRD DOGS" and are admittedly out training during those peak nesting months.
i pointed out how the minority hound hunting community is being profiled just like u.r.e. has claimed. no big surprise here....i intend to apply as much pressure necessary to get odfw to pull there heads out of the sand. personally i'm glad no hound hunters attended this particular meeting. i had mr. anglin all to myself for well over a half hour prior to the meeting and was very satisfied i drove my point home about the abuse of power with odfw and usda. i don't seperate either group.nor do i separate bear from cougar and bird nesting. the state hires the federal government to do our hunting so both are fair game.
bottom line guys....get those public comment forms filled out and sent off to the commission asap. demand equal rights to hunt our hounds like they are going to allow the bird doggers...i personally hate training...it opens up another can of worms....define training or hunting. i learned this during the bill clinton years...."define"... well you know the rest....mike

Here is the schedule, last night was the first meeting.
Jerry Ray was interviewed about it: http://kezi.com/news/local/195770 my computer stinks, so I haven't been able to watch the video.
Got that yesterday, but didn't follow up, so thanks again for the nudge.

Yep, lots of griping birddoggers. They admitted to illegally training, and now are ticked to be "regulated" My eyes misted for them.
As far as their limits go, it makes sense because several there were ready to get a free permit and have a good time letting loose a box of birds. I think, absolutely, for the free permit to release they oughta have paid for a dang OR hunting license.
Nesting bird rules lifted according to Ron Anglin (except on SIWA, pointed out DA duck hunters several times) and unless one is releasing/taking, no permit needed.
Apologies to bird hunters, but I could barely stand to listen to their whiny asses.
Actually thinking about them is causing my headache to return...so la dee da.
Comments will be accepted untill January 12, 2011 and the commission meets on it very early February.
