Dogs For Sale

Post by Daniel Tremblay »

Does anyone else pay any attention to how many freaking dogs certain people put up for sale? I'm just strictly curious but I find it very funny how people always seem to have a smokin awesome dog for sale. I dunno maybe its just me but i've always been told that a true good dog is never for sale unless death or divorce or something along those lines. When will the dog jockey bullsh*t end ?

I suppose i should have clearified why I care about this subject. Reason is, it is usually a newby or a youngin that gets the short end of the stick while the saler gets money for garbage. I sure as heck know that if it wasnt for my father in-law I would have got screwed over more than a few times. That is for sure not the way to introduce the sport to someone.

So newbys and youngin's watch out and check the dog and saler out before buying!

I know several guys that make their living with their dogs and have been producing them for years. They usually always have a dog for sale and they are not junk. It's just part of the way they make their living. There are the other kind also.

In my experience the guys that are buyiing the dogs or pups have got all these expectations and dont know how to get from point A to point B. Its easier to blame the seller then come to grasp that your an idiot and this is alot different then watching where the red fern grows....Speaking from my own experience, only difference is i know without a doubt im an idiot.

If you dont feel good about the deal dont do it. If you arent willing to spend the time or money hunting with the dogs or the pups parents...look in the mirror. I dont care what you have or what you breed...there are no GUARANTEES with hounds. They are not "idiot proof" and i have proved this theory over time and time again. If you haven't found a bad hound your not hunting them hard enough.

Best of luck in your searches, jason

Good post Jason and I agree. Im not looking for a dog, I just got tired of the BS. But to clarify I'm refering to the guys that are selling junk, knowing they are junk. Startin a dog and selling it as a started dog is not what im meaning. A guy that can raise of have a pup, start it and have it going good and sell it, that is not a jockey in my eyes. Thats someone with a great talent and a businessman.

well im not going hide it daniel, I am a dog jockey i sell alot of dogs but like Jason said usually its the buyer that needs their head examined! I usually buy dogs from someone that was going to be a hunter and then found out that they don't have the time, money, opportunity or smarts to give a dog the chance! I am a weekend warrior so i don't do it everyday but i do it and see enough game to give dogs chances! I have a couple dogs that i keep and am always looking for the next superstar, so i sell alot of dogs that see more game than most yet some buyer that don't know what hes doing or thinks a started dog means finished dog for goodness sakes! Now on a side note the prices people ask for on this internet is absolutely crazy, not saying they don't get it but my god, if a dog barks at the neighbors cat they ask for 1000 dollars! So its like major sports as long as theres buyers the owners are gonna give athletes an insane amout of money! Whether its deserved or not!

Daniel, i agree with you...just throwing in the other side of the fence that most people dont take into consideration. It goes both ways and everyone is looking for a $5000.00 for $500.00. Me included....

When people call you up about a dog, they want you to tell them what they want to hear instead of what your saying.... It all starts when you've told them about the dog and their reply is "dont ya thing they would......."

Im with piglet, always looking for the next superstar....just dont know what one looks like yet. Maybe someday, til then happy hunting.

Take care, jason

I want a $5000 dog for $500? where can I get one?? Hell, my kid just tried to trade his $15,000 dollar mule to his Grandpa for a piece of crap big headed junk blue dog, and got told to go pound sand! Some people just think that their stuff is better just cause they own it, he should have given him the blue dog, and one of them other piece of junk dogs, like that no socializing, wierd assed blue lookin female, that I know catches elk cause I seen it, and she lets house cats eat her food, and even growls at ya!

well fallriver i would bet dollars to dog shit that there are five hundred dollar dogs out there that will catch game! I find the problem is that whoever buys it will not hunt the dog enough to make it a 5000 dog! Its the value of dogs that i believe is wrong! The highest i would ever pay for a puppy is 300 dollars and it better be some fancy breeding that you really want! 400-800 dollars is a started dog that will tree and run by itself(even trash) This price range also is where old dogs go, those that you hope you can get a year or so out of but can catch a lion by itself, maybe a bobcat or two or will start a bear and is not trashy, they also need to keep young dogs at the tree, since some tend to get bored after a bit! 1000-2000 is a solid dog that can do by itself, now these dogs usually catch 25-40% of bobcats, and just about all lions(within reason), and also be a solid dog on bear. 2500-4000 dollar dogs these are ones nobody wants to sell unless life turns difficult, These dogs need to be exceptional bear dogs or very good cat dogs ones that catch all lions and 50-75% of bobcats, they need to be between 3-7 years old and pretty broke, no dog is 100% but they better just need a reminder and won't leave good game for trash! Over 4000 dollars i can only see for special bobcat dogs, that catch over 75% of bobcats and are broke off bear so dry grounding can be done! There are always exceptions but as a rule this is close i think! Unless you have more money than time or hunt for a living i have a hard time with high dollar prices i hunt for fun and have a family so is hard for me not to sell dogs for high dollar but if someone offers i can resist either!lol

Daniel,Ill give you my two cents here.....I try to go by these guide lines..IF IT IS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS.....I usually sell around 3 dogs a year...When I was hunting 3 or 4 states, I sold more...I agree with Jason, everyone wants a finished dog for a started price....Hey,who doesnt :D :D ....

Here is some advice that would help a lot of people not to get ripped off or be more successful with the dog they buy....LEARN HOW TO HUNT FIRST...There are a lot of what I call ADD WATER INSTANT LION HUNTERS out there...They are the ones who get taken the most...Those are the guys or gals that these dog jockies prey on .Dont be one of those....If you are going to buy a dog from someone , go try it out...If you cant. Do your homework ,make phone calls to references, ask questions of the owners...If you dont know what to ask,get ahold of an experienced hunter and ask him or her what to look for...Check the guys rep....You have all these experieced guys on this forum.....USE THEM...If they had forums like this when I first started ,I guarantee I would have not made near the mistakes in dogs that I did....

Dean is right about the dog jockies getting rooted out around here ...Off this site, I would be real warry of who I bought a dog off of....FIND A REPUTABLE GUY TO GET A DOG FROM ... There are alot of good houndsmen that offer good dogs for sale out there...I would be real careful of someone mass produceing 5000 dollar dogs out there

Buying dogs is like buying used cars....You better test drive them before you put the cash up.... :) ...

.Good luck to ya...Coop

I have bought dogs from a reputable source who hunts for a living. He will sell his best dog if the price is right and then in his words, " I'll just go make anothe one". As long as the buyer is happy and the seller is honest, more power to em.
when in doubt turn em out
