Astro external power/loosing signal

Post by Cat track »

I seen on here some where that someone was using a motorola phone charger for external power in the truck. I tried and it seem to work fine but, it seemed like i lost signal real easy when pluged in. When unpluged i got signal back immediatley. Any thoughts? Is there any risk of burning something up since thats not the power cord made for it.

Wouldn't worry about burning it up. All of the Mini USB connectors should put out 5V that's the same as the connector to your Computer puts out when you plug into the Computer, Unless you have a connector that is broken and Giving more Voltage than what it's supposed to.

Amps won't hurt the device either since it only takes what it needs.. It could be rated to 5Amps but the Device will only take what it needs (Meaning you can force Feed more amps)

I My system is plugged in all the time and I don't loose signal. I think there is something going on with your system.

Give me a Call if you want to test out a Garmin Power supply to see if there is a difference... My guess is not, But I'm sure Garmin is going to tell you otherwise so they'll want you to use one of theirs. Then you can Either ship it back to me, or Buy it.

Another option Is to Buy a 12VDC to USB adapter and plug in the cable that came with your Garmin.

Muck, Your unit will shut down after 30 sec. after unpluging the unit. unless you push a button before the 30 sec. is up. Maybe that's not your issue?

Buddy, thanks for the info. Maybe it was just one of those days. I'll try it again.

I've had my connector get loose from them and they don't make good connection so they loose the connection while I'm not paying attention either. But never had to pull batteries to get it to turn on.

Maybe its just mine, but I don't seem to get as good of range when I'm hooked up to the external power cord.?

The charger you have may not have enough voltage, or amps to power the unit properly.
