Butcher shop trimmings etc...

Ok, so what about other sources of high quality food for the hounds??? Does anybody have a butcher that sells them red meat scraps? Or game processer? Or pick up resturant scraps? Just looking for ideas. Also, anybody know how to get ground bone meal? And what about bread? How much of that can you give a dog? I have been doing pretty good telling my hunting friends to call me when they clean out their freezer and I'll take all the old meat and any food I can use for dogs. Also, they bring me the outer trimmings from their wild meat and bones for my dogs to strip clean. Some of my hounds won't eat a coon or oposum unless I cook it??? Why is that? They love bobcat. I'm gonna try some beaver soon.

I have used beef scraps and bones from when a buddy butchers cows... The dogs love the meat and bones. A beef leg will keep them busy for a few days in the kennel. I have never used beaver meat for hounds, but i heard it is really good for their coats!

Here is what I do. I get road kill one dead deer will feed my dogs for 2 weeks or more. When I drive 2 work in the morn if there is a deer hit I know its freash so I pick it up when I go home. There is a guy down the road that makes feed for cows,pigs well just about anything and he was telling me 10 years ago he made some stuff for slead dogs we got to talking he makes this minneral and grain mix that I mix with the meat. Works real good it smells like wheat when u mix it toghter with the meat. He said it is preatty hard 2 get bone meal because u can't give it to cows.

In most states it is illegal to pick-up road kill unless it is within a open season and you have a lic. and tag for it

We give EVERY table scrap to our dogs.

Not too much bread though, some but not a ton. We have given meat scraps from the butcher and only had 1 dog get E-coli from it. A lot of people may think that 1 dog would not make it worth the risk, but we have fed more dogs at a single time then most people have seen lol.

Every butcher we have gotten them from has just given them to us, it saves them a trip to the dump to throw it away, so they are kinda grateful.

Always have caution when feeding any food, a lot of the time with scraps from butcher or restaurant you will have to carefully go through it because there is trash in it too.

My brother in law only feeds butcher scraps. I fed a 55 gal drum of it to my dogs and they seemed to like it. I didn't mind as it was cold out, but when it warms up, boy does it get ripe. I didn't care for the bones laying around and having to gather them up, but on the other side of the story, my dogs always had something to do, chew on them. It seemed to keep them a little more content on the days I should have been hunting. I do know that my brother in law's dogs look good and have ample energy.

Beaver meat is on top of the list. Mushers in Alaska love it and prefer it over any other type meat they get. Get a hold of a few of your local trappers, they'll gladly give you all thier carcasses. Another meat on top of the list is horse meat. Usually pretty easy to get a hold of, find out who picks up dead horses in your area and give him your number. No reason to be paying for meat for your dogs. Its free if you can find the right source.

im not sure if id be in a hurry to feed my dogs deer, for what seems to me an obvious reason. i dont want my dogs doing anything with a deer except maybe cowering down when they smell one.

im lucky the girlfriends dad is a butcher. i knew she was good for somethin...lol

Farmers up here if a cow or horse dies ,they just haul it out to the back 40

i would be afraid to give them raw meat during the warmer months

Be carefull of any bones dogs are able to break and chew up. I have seen 1 hound and 1 German Shepherd that were plugged up by bone splinters.

Foxcat, feeding deer meat to your hounds will NOT affect them chasing deer, that is completely false. Meat smells nothing like a deers scent.

Bob, I grind all my meat I feed the dogs, then I bag it up into smaller bags, about one pound each. Throw it in the microwave for about three minutes to cook it. I do not like feeding raw meat, why take a chance.

I was told it was a federal offense to feed a horse to any kind of animal, since like the 90s. The fish hatcheries used to feed ground horse to the fish, but they can't do that anymore because it is illegal.

Maybe it's not, that's just what I have been told by a few people.

Find a resturant supply or wholesaler. I buy chicken backs and turkey necks pretty cheap.
There is a book out there called give a dog a bone. It is based on the barf diet. I'm sure you could find a web site with info about what raw or scraps to use. I never had a problem feeding chicken and raw bones.
