I've had real good luck crossing them with bluetics.

i was only being curious. stuff like this helps me and my breedin. i have a litter of 3/4 walker 1/4 plott on the way out of a nailor/lipper female and a sackett/dillingham male. next spring i'll be making a cross with a 1/2 bluetick1/2 black and tan male to a sackett/dillingham female( littermate to the above male). all four dogs i have mentioned are finished truck to tree dogs. best four i own. best four i have ever owned to be honest.kinda hoping to eventually get all four into one if the puppies make and prove worthy of breeding.

Well my Walker/lab has done realy well. I some times wish I had left him intact so I could have tried breeding him to a hound and see if he passed it on. Oh well hind sight and all that... Then again maybe its just the amount of hunting I am able to get in and the target rich area we hunt.

Walker/Leopard, Walker/English are the best crosses I've seen. But I'm not a big fan of cross breeding.

I voted English, but for me what it comes down to more than what breed. Is like you said plottpapaw, you answered your own question right there. When I bear hunted in North Carolina some years back, I was in the company of some good hunting walker english crosses. Bottom line though is what produces the results in the woods for you, not color.

you are right hollow point. breeding best to best is best bet. it does help me see diff things though. i've just now reach the point in my breeding that i feel very confident breeding from only my own front yard. even though i do have other options in my hunting group but i do own some of the best we have. my next cross will put me making a cross i have never made before. the out come will be 1/4 walker 1/4 plott 1/4 black and tan 1/4 bluetick. the two dogs are my very best. compliment each other very well. i was hoping ppl would give me reasons for why they like the cross. for instance why do the majority of ppl like to cross to a blue dog. is it nose or speed. more or less its for research on how each breed compliments each other when crossed. if that makes any sense.

Plottpappaw : You are asking the $64,000.00 Question  This is one of the reasons I absolutely do NOT want to become a BREEDER . Got 4 blue dogs and 1 english . Among the bluedogs EACH has their own personality that I really don't think shows up till they are 3 years old . As to combining 2,3,4, breeds to arrive at the point of reaching Grit ,Speed , Nose etc even with-in the same litter you still have many types of personalities . To me ULTIMATELY it is WHAT is DONE with them after they are on the ground that is the most IMPORTANT. I have hunted with a few that were Walker X Blue and Walker X English crosses Most were VERY GOOD but I would not say GREAT . Kinda like a lot of people on this forum  Have at it and I DO wish you success . I would also have to say that you have had to have gone through a lot of culls to get to this point

mr baldwin i can assure you there have been a million dogs through here.( a lil exageration). i'm not wanting to be a breeder just to successfully raise quality hounds for my personal use and to distribute them among those who want them within our hunting group. sometimes recieving others opinions may make you take in to consideration a quality you had over looked. yes i agree on the personality diff and know that no two dogs are the same. there is no guarentee that my puppies will make or be breeding quality but feel like i have a good shot at raising quality pups. was only looking for things i may miss in each particular breed

Why cross breed? If you want Walkers; breed for Walkers.

If you want Plotts, breed for Plotts.

The point that I'm trying to make is that there are definite traits in each breed that set them apart. To cross them will get you mediocrity at its best.

I cant tell you how many times I've heard guys say they want the speed of Walker with the grit of Plott.

Ok

How do you know that you wont get the speed of Plott with the grit of Walker?

i must disagree i see far better mixed dogs than pure breds. if you figure it this way; you want to breed an outstanding female and the dog you want to breed to has similar papers but is only a mediocre dog but you also have a friend who has an outstanding dog of another breed why not breed two outstanding dogs together. mr baldwin had a great post. imo matching personality and traits is more important when the main objective is catching game rather than having a piece of paper that goes with a dog. if certain traits set breeds apart then why not combine instead of saying boy i like my plotts grit but sure do wish they had the nose of a blue dog. well dad jim go for it try and get that blue dog nose with that plott grit. shoot it may not work the first time or with that cross but there aint a law stating you can't try something diff on round two. thats were culling is important. i do respect those hound guys that breed for what makes them happy. whether it be pure or mixed at the end of the day we feed and hunt what makes us happy but some share similar views and ideals and sharing them helps each other and the sport along with comradery. jmo
