Road Drags

I was looking for ideas on some drags. (no grawes type drags either). I have used tires in the past , but they don't do so good in rocky country. Just lookin for some ideas and wanted to see what other folks use or if they even use em.

Hello Joe,
Use the large 6' to 8' tires, if you have a full size truck that will pull the weight.
This will give you 2 drags. You have seen the type they use for troughs.
Slice the tires length wise, drill 2 holes for a cable loop and drag with the flat side down.
It will slowly push the rocks to the side leaving a smooth dusty surface with the rocks forming a curb.
To slice the tires I have used a jack, knife and hacksaw. It splits easier than one might think.
I run the cable through the tire and make it short enough so it won't kick rocks into the back of the truck or rear window.
Use a low gear or you will tear up your transmission, especially with an automatic.

Find you a nice bushy cedar tree, drag it up both sides of the road, wash, whatever.

A few railroad ties works good, just got to make sure they dont jump around too much, add some weight on top of them. Heavy enough to fix washboard roads most of the time.

Ghc, You drag the roads so you wipe out all old tracks and you have nice fresh dirt to find tracks in.

I have found the cedar trees do work really well. Probably the best thing i have found yet.

Yeah what are you trying to do with the drag? wipe the road down so you can see tracks or just smooth out your road?

I wasn't sure if it was a track thing or your roads were in need of help either. for tracks a double row of regular car/lt tires work or you can use heavy chain link fence with a railroad tie wrapped in the front and one in the rear with six to eight feet of fence in between. if your shoulders are steep cut the ties into sections so it will flex along the contour. used atv tires are lighter but also flex better with less bounce and hop or chance of flying rocks three rows hooked together work and are easier on the tow vehicle. if your dragging roads like mine with big ass rocks sticking up I'd recommend the many small tire option, less likely to snag.
this my opinion here but if guys are dragging roads anyway it is nice of them to drag the roads in a manner that will improve the road surface. a flexible vee shaped drag pulled pointing backwards helps maintain the crown on narrow roads. a straight slant with more weight on the ditch side work for wider roads. don't use anything that digs into the road. it causes erosion and more wear on your tow vehicle. a little thought goes a long way here. I know I'd look more kindly on some guy dragging my roads improving them then someone flattening them out and causing gullies and wash outs. I spend enough time grading them and filling in after heavy rains as it is. As for public roads everyone will appreciate a better road and constant damage may lead to the practice becoming illegal.
