Oregon coast dogs
Just wondering what the most popular breed of dog you guys from the coast have run either past or present from cats to bears and lions when it was legal. I know now most dogs are walkers but did anybody run anything different like blueticks or plotts or what kinda dog you liked for the gnarly brush we have on the coast. Just a curiosity thing I dont wanna start a this breed is better or this color dog with this color head does this better

Re: Oregon coast dogs
When I grew up in Toledo Or. it seemed there were a lot more different breeds around.I saw some good dogs of just about every breed for cat and bear. When I was real young we mostly cat hunted and had some redbone walker crosses and a walker bluetick cross. Then we had some redbone black and tan crosses that did pretty good on both cat and bear.We let them die off without ever getting any pups.Next we got pretty serious about the bear hunting and got some plotts that through prety consitant bear dogs in the brush. I seen some good plott cat dogs but the ones we had were not they were strictly bear dogs. Now I just cat hunt and have all walkers with some running dog mixed in.I am happy with the dogs I have now but every once in a while I cant help but think old so and so that we had when I was a kid would have lined that cat out and treed it.Then again we could pretty much hunt year round back then so those dogs had a big advantage. Take care, Larry
Re: Oregon coast dogs
When I first started hunting in the mid 60' there were very few walkers around. Plotts were coming into use for bear but we saw a lot more blueticks and black&tans dogs around. There were a lot more airedales and airedales cross also. A good dog was a good dog no matter what he was. Things slowly changed to walkers. Every body likes a fast dog or the lead dog in a race, which is why the walkers became popular. Fast is not always better. The first walkers had a lot of the running dog traits. I think breeding the walkers for coon trials and treeing contest has hurt the breed. The old walkers not far from the running dogs were better dogs. Just my opinion. Dewey

I know from talking to my grandpa he said he used to hunt walker airedale crosses and a few redbones and walker redbone crosses. He said he had some purebred airedales that would run with the hounds. Idk if they contributed anything to the race or at the tree but he did have em in his pack.
Re: Oregon coast dogs
I had a airedale that I treed 5 cats with around my house during the time I had no hounds. She was hell on coons, hard tree dog but would not take a cold track. Years ago when we ran some with our bear dogs they were so far ahead of the hounds it was unreal. A lot of the old time lion hunters in the southwest ran some with there lion dogs. They hunted the lion more than trailed it. In the 20' and 30' the airedales were the most popular breed of dogs. Dewey
