What is your guys thoughts on hounds broke to one certain species and being allowed later in life to pursue something different that they were not previously allowed to pursure. Ex. Say you got a 5 or 6 year old cat dog and he was a straight cat dog, then he changed hands to a new owner and was ran with fox dogs, do you think you are opening a can of worms and allowing him to chase other species such as bears or lions? Being he was not allowed to chase fox before and now he is ?
Just curious if anyone has had something like this happen or know anyone who has.

Re: Broke hounds, trashin.
I think that most of the time they will only run what the other dogs will run. If the other dogs start trashing eventually the older dog will too. I think that it also depends on the dog and the previous owner, how harsh the punishment was for trashing ect.
I had a dog given to me that was a bear dog and I tried to put her on cats and she didnt know what to do, but eventually if my younger dogs started a deer race she wasnt bashfull about joining in and even started to strike them. I think that even if you are very careful it could still go either way. You might not have any problems or you might have ruined a good broke dog.

Personally I would NOT try to UNLEARN a hound ,Don't know if you really can or not . Before I went through the head-ache ,If he was a Cat Hound I would give him to another cat hunter. Too many other hounds out there to hunt with . Why make problems for yourself

Re: Broke hounds, trashin.
Glen, thanks for the reply, thats kinda what i had in mind, i was just curious is all.
Bob, it was an example and nothing more, I would not ruin a good cat dog, i was simply asking a ? to see if anything like that has happened to anyone. I was just curious and wanted to talk about something new, i doubt anyone would fess up to it even if they had!!
Ya see, im not shy and will admit to my mistakes ( if it was) and i wont make excuses for dogs either!!! I bought a supposed to be bear dog a while back and he was decent nothing to brag about, the guy was just a coon and bear hunter. I made the mistake of runnin him with my varmit dogs a few times, whether he was trashy or not when i bought him i don't know, maybe i made him trashy by allowing him to run varmit. He would strike deer and coyotes and pull other young dogs with him, and my other more reliable dogs would check him, coming back to the truck, he didn't last long to say the least.
So if anyone else had something similar to this happen i would like to hear about it. Thanks DC.

Re: Broke hounds, trashin.
DC,
I've sure had it happen. Quite often I'll get a dog that has some age on him, but has got the breeding and I'll try him with the cat dogs. But I'm a suspicious person and no matter how broke a dog suppose to be, when I first throw a new dog into the pack he will have a shock collar on.
Then this is a good time to test your good young dogs that are coming on and doing good. They (good young started dogs) have learned not to start any trash and they know the game they are after, but...they have never been exposed to a trashy dog, so they think ever dog that barks has good game. They have not learned to come out of a trash race. So...the only dogs in the cat dog pack that are not wearing a shocking collar at the time I'm trying a new dog, is the older broke dogs that I KNOW can't be tempted into anything wrong. ALL young dogs will have one on or anything else that I don't think will come out of a trash race.
To me, this is the final step to fully breaking a dog. A broke dog suppose to come out of a trash race. If a dog is never exposed to something how can he learn from it.
Now these new dogs I've tried, I've had some that sure made good dogs. It took a little work, but I was always ready for whatever might happen. And I also got to teach my young dogs to come out of a trash race.
Only disadvantage, I guess, is my dogs are not very good about honoring a dog that they do not know. Which does not bother me at all. Other cat hunters come and go with me ever now and then. Their dog might start a cat, but my dogs are a little leary about honoring them tell they smell the cat, then they'll put in. This is just my experience. Robbie

DC, In most cases you will be just fine but it is truely up to the hound if he or she will turn over but in most cases I would say you should be fine I have seen straight bobcat dogs roll over and become great lion hounds in their later years. Andy
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.

Re: Broke hounds, trashin.
Thank you guys for your posts, SOUTH TEXAN you bring some good points. Twist, The dogs you speak of changing over to great lion dogs, did they try and run other game or just what they were put after. Are you allowing those dogs to do the rigging or striking or turning them in?
Mike, what's your thoughts or opinions? Never had anything like that happen?
