Best hound for lion hunting. (question and newbie)

Post by Major »

I have been reading up on my hounds for some time now. I have been on this forum for only a little while and already see that people can get pretty nasty on here. Im not trying to sound like a pansy in any way but i would enjoy only good discussions. Now the plott breed and bluetick breed (as i have read) seem to be must haves in a lion pack. The Plott has the grit and Bluetick the cold nose. Is this true? People on here are saying now that the newer Plott lines are just a bunch of bay dogs? I wanted the plott for its grit and to pull hair. I dont want a bay dog. Thats what the cold nosed bluetick is for. I was just wondering what dogs and breeds are used in lion packs that produce game on a consistent basis. And also what do you think of my observations?

thanks,

Peter

Peter, with all do respect, i think you need to research a little more and read through alot of the post in the lion hunting section, go to the photo gallery and look at the pics in there look at the dogs and make that decision on your own. You are new i know, but you are provoking a ufc smack down in the making lol. Everyone and there dogs are different, the country they hunt is different requiring different dogs, people hunt multiple species with the same pack of hounds so that also makes a difference. My advice to you is do some research and look up a few guys in YOUR area who are consistantly catching the game you want and take a look at the hounds they are running and where ethey came from, breed and strains of dogs within that breed, all make a difference. If you look in the gallery like i mentioned look at guys in your area and see what kind of dogs they run. Try and get your foot in the door be respectfull and polite offer to help out and tray and tag along, see if you like the dogs they hunt and how they handle and catch, and go from there. Good luck and i hope you find what you are looking for.. DC

breed don't matter, that is all ford Vs chevy nonsense. good cat dogs in every breed of hound. just need good nose, smarts, speed, endurance and the want to. that goes for whatever game you're after.

I totally agree 100%, That last thing you want to do is go collor blind. Buy a dog for what it can do not for what it looks like. JMO

I think you mix a walker with a bluetic or a plott. the walkers seem to have a super cold nose and tons of brains. my all time favorite cross is a bluetic walker cross. good dogs in every breed, but I have consitantly caught alot of cats with my bluetic walkers. jmo.

I like the ones that catch lions! haha. I have bought lots of lion dogs over the years, and have come to the conclusion that every breed can catch lions equally well. Depends on the individual dog. If at all possible, buy the dog at the tree, preferably with the lion staring down at you. If you buy pups, plan on having lots of culls. Experience in training cat dogs plays a huge role in wether the dog will succeed or not. If you don't have much experience, buy a finished dog if you want to be consistently catching lions any time soon. There's been volumes written on the subject, but I firmly believe it comes down to the individual dog and the experience of the trainer. Everyone will argue and piss and moan that this breed is better than that breed, but most of my best lion dogs were mixed breed. Bluetick/walker, Plott/walker, redtick/bluetick, redbone/plott just to name a few. Hope this helps.

Yeah man i say just get some dogs you want and put some hard work into them and they will catch lions, I run a blue tick walker and a little english cross they work great, two of my buddys run red bones and they are great dogs, i had one it was my first hound loved him, if there has been one thing that my friend that taught me about lion hunting and hound hunting is the more time you hunt your dogs and the harder you work the better your dogs will be. There are good and bad hounds in every breed good luck man

exactly i took the best of three my female is a B&T bluetick cameron and the pups dad was a full walker my one little male pup has one hell of a nose on him already i cant believe it already make a drag with a coon hide he will follow it and if he goes the wrong way he will back track him self till he picks it up agine and then follow it out he just recently started talking to the coon hide tonight for a little bit im happy as a guy can be but it is like comparing ford chevys and dodges together now if you could take the better parts from one truck and add to another then take something good off the other and put it on the other truck , comparison to dogs you start out looking for a good dog train it hunt it find out what they lack and look for a mate that has those quality's you are looking for and so 63 days down the line you have puppy's ,now to find out what they posses at 3-6 weeks old hot dogs and coon tails and or bob cat faces make it a game for them . once you have made up your mind keep with it and you will be able to see your hard work pay off , then as you are hunting that newly discovered hunting pup he/she lacks in a department maybe speed voice or even looks so you do ,your home work find a female or male with the looks you so desire and cross over agine same thing before you buy a dog test drive the parent's to make sure you like how they hunt before you go and spend but loads of money on a dog . back to the truck comparison to a dog an all purpose truck id build in relations to a dog take a 12 v Cummings motor being brute force the ford body for looks and the allison transmission for get er done stamina and tree power just my two cents here though
