Mexican authorities to release Mexican wolves in Sonora

Sept. 12, 2011

PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been informed that Mexican authorities plan to release five Mexican wolves this month at an undisclosed ranch location in northeastern Sonora, Mexico.

While the department does not know the specific date or other details at this time, it has received indications that the wolves being released will be fitted with satellite tracking collars.

Game and Fish is currently considering what, if any, impacts this release might have on Arizona’s Mexican wolf conservation and stakeholders. The department will continue to monitor activities related to the planned release and inform constituents as information becomes available.

Arizona Game and Fish has been actively involved in the multi-partner effort reintroducing Mexican wolves to portions of their historical range in the east-central portion of the state for many years. In 1998, 11 captive-reared Mexican wolves were released into the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area (BRWRA) in eastern Arizona. The current population was assessed to be around 50 animals during 2011 monitoring.

The Mexican wolf is considered endangered in the United States.

That is interesting.....I can't see it being true as ranchers in Sonora poisin, trap and kill anything they can if they feel it may kill their stock.
Afew years ago I was with a rancher looking at deer leases in the Sierra Madre Mountains several miles east of Hermosillo and there was a dead coyote on every gate post on that ranch...one ranch we looked at had 3 huge jaguar hides and several lion skins nailed to the wall in his house that he had killed, all were killing calves on his ranch, they had been trapped as you could see the damage on the front feet...they were not very old hides...
Wolves in Sonora will cause a bigger problem and in my opinion will cause ranches to go out and try more aggresivly to kill them should they cause livestock predation, in turn the cats will loose out and I think the authorities reccognise this.
At the Mountain Lion Workshop this past May in Montana this topic was addressed and how they were planning to work with the ranchers who were loosing stock to jaguars and lions so I can't see a wolf reintroduction happening....BUT dumber things have been done by both Government bodies in Mexico as well as the US..
We'll sell them some Candian wolves and they can call them what ever they like!!!
