Bears to Lions...your thoughts

Post by idahohunter »

I have two hounds. One has been on a bunch of bears and the other is only a year old and she has probably chased 10-12 bears and made 6 trees between spring and fall. She's nothing special, but she goes and has caught one bear where there was only one other dog at the tree. I've had her on some lion scent training (method found on this site) with the Graws scent and she goes wild and does really well even as I've used less and less scent.

Here is my question because I've heard different things from different people: In general, how do bear dogs do dropped on a hot snow lion track for the first time?

I've talked to a couple of houndsmen who have dogs that can catch anything and think that catching a lion in the snow is almost a joke it is so easy. Others act like its a big change because of less scent. I'm talking good conditions: night old tracks in good snow.

Your thoughts?

If my dogs don't do both then they are going to get shipped down the road pretty darn quick; but............they are bred for both. My opinion is that most dogs show a preference but can go on either. That being said I know some dogs who do one but wont do the other. I know some hot nosed bear dogs don't like to grind out a old lion track but again, if you hunt them long enough after what you want them to chase, a lot of times they will do it for you.

Id say most bear dogs will catch a snow lion...but not a whole lot can do it in the dirt on a lion. Just walk the track out till its hot enough for your dogs to take it... JMO

I think that is good advice! You will want to keep up with the dogs the best you can because a dog that is used to trailing a hot bear track can easily over run a lion track and have a loss, which is no big deal if you are right there close to put them back on the track.

Trying to get the point across to these dogs that they are lion hunting now not bear. They were dumped out on a lion track a few days ago and treed a bear. That's twice now. Lol. Don't they know if they are not on the rig then we are looking for lions not bears. Last month they rigged and caught a lion so they are probably just confused Need the dog whisperer. :D
