who runs without tracking gear?
I am only asking this to see if there is anyone out there not using it to hunt lions. An outfitter I know has a good area that has some giant cats that come through. He also has plenty of wolves and plenty of roads. He feels he can offer a client a good hunt at a fair price and not use collars. He has some older gears, but does not want to disqualify his clients cats from B&C. No need to get snarky here, just like to know what you think about this scenario.

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
i dont thing having the tracking collars on the dogs will disqualify them from the record book. Only if you use it to find your dogs under the tree then kill the cat will it disqualify from the record book the most important thing is to get your dogs back !!!!ALWAYS!!!! and use the best method possible i would never dump my dogs without some sort of tracking equitment so throw some collars on and walk the track without beeping and you should be fine! there is no reason that you shouldnt have at leased a beep beep box or gps on your dogs now a days u really owe it to them!!! hope that helps.

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
Not having wolves or a paying client makes it easier to give a pass, but I have had dogs injured or that got eat up that I would have never found without the collars.

heres what the Boone and Crockett club says
I for one would not let dogs loose in wolf country without tracking collars. Mike Leonard might be able to shed some light on qusetion #2 on what they say about collars being used, since ive seen his name in the cat section of the B&C book last time I took a peek at one
http://www.boone-crockett.org/huntingEt ... tingEthics...Please answer the following questions only if the entry is for a cougar, jaguar, or bear:
Were dogs used in conjunction with the pursuit and harvest of this animal?
Yes No
If the answer to the above question is yes, answer the following statements:
1. I was present on the hunt at the times the dogs were released to pursue this animal.
True False
2. If electronic collars were attached to any of the dogs, receivers were not used to harvest this animal.
True False
To the best of my knowledge the answers to the above statements are true. If the answer to either #1 or #2 above is false, please explain on a separate sheet.

So does #2 mean you can have collars on dogs but can't look at your reciever? What, that can't be right.

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
It is common knowledge that once the reciever is turned on and used to locate your dogs, the animal is no longer eligible for the B&C record book. This is where they draw the line on fair chase. I can assure you that rule has been "bent" more than once. Just like the 60 day "drying period", those rules put us on the honor system. Back to the original question.
Re: who runs without tracking gear?
I never had a tracking system for the first 3 0r so years I started running. you just got to gear up and start hiking when you turn out. the way my garmin has been working lately I might as well not have the damned thing!!!!

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
I caught several lions before I bought tracking equipment. The guys that got me started caught a lot more than I did before they bought their tracking gear. It can be done, but I know I'd never go back to turning the hounds out without it. When your young and dumb and don't know any better God just might help you out. When you know better, your probably on your own.

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
I imagine your more worried about the "plenty of wolves" showing up than running dogs without using the box to locate them because its a B&C Lion and taking the time to find the dogs and get a client into the tree.
1. you would have to get a guide that can keep up with the dogs and be at the tree keeping a eye out for the wolves till the client can get to the tree.
2. Only take clients that are physicaly capable of keeping up with the dogs.

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
Foolish with out collars if you ask me. A few days ago I turned out on a two day old track at noon. We finally found the dogs about 6 miles and 5 hours later under the tree laying down because they were to tired to even bark any more, at least until they seen us coming. All the tracks were covered up by elk, It was dark and it was very cold out. Without GPS we may have never found the dogs that night. So if you care about dogs, collar e'm up.
Re: who runs without tracking gear?
There's different hunters different terrain and then the variation in terrain and hounds plus other variables. So saying a tracker is a absolute necessity is probably over the top for lion. If its hard running long winded game like bear etc. There's more arguments for the trackers use. Its a sport and dogs ran for years with out them. Granted wolves in the area or heavy traffic also change the circumstances. Road hunters should all use them in my opinion because of the nature of such hunting and because the dogs may not have learned to back track to the drop out properly. There's also the fact if the hunters on the road he won't know if anything has happened or changed once the hounds are out of hearing. For foot, horse etc hunting where the hunters are always close to the dogs its not as important. That said they are nice when you do need one. And if you left it at home you probably Will need it. Either way do your best and get the dogs out and walk if you have to.
Re: who runs without tracking gear?
I dont run collars and we are never close to the dogs, I don't run them cause really i trust my dogs and yes it has bit me a few times but i like to follow the chase no matter how hard it is, its fun to me, and old timer around here has never run collars in 25 years of hunting and treeing cats, they got a tom last year that is in the B&C and this is the reason exactly why he does not run collars so you don't have to deal with these gray areas all the time.

Re: who runs without tracking gear?
I went many many years without tracking collars but when I started running bear a lot I went to them and I am not sure it helped me catch anymore bears but it did help get a few dogs back that most likely would not have been retrieved or taken back from others.
Where I lion hunt on horseback I seldom need tracking collars and if I am hunting right out of a camp or the ranch I don't worry about them becasue I am usually pretty close to my hounds unless they are running some off game and in that case I need a different collar. Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!
One of our most famous bare ground hunters Warner Glenn has never used tracking collars but he runs shock collars. Warner hunts remote areas and doesn't have to put up with dog thieves or wolves as much as a lot of guys do.
I think the GPS collars are a real revelation and although I don't have them yet I will probably get some before long. I like the idea others have shared with me about knowing what each dog is really doing if you can't see them so you know who is carrying the load and who is piggybacking.
