I guess I am stubborn and old school in that regard. I have hunted with one on a couple different occasions, and actually the thrill of the hunt goes away as soon as the Garmin comes out. Even though it is more work, I enjoy using my "senses" to find my dogs, and only then pull out my Quick Track as a last resort to find missing dogs.
For example yesterday, it would have been cool to know exactly how far away the dogs were from the quad when I started into the tree, but it would have taken away from the excitement of listening to them tree their hearts out. It may have come in handy thuogh, if I would have kept walking in from my original spot. But my instinct, and the way I was hearing them, told me to go back to the bottom of the road I was on, then farther up the canyon and walk up the hill from there. Sure glad I did that instead of continuing to walk from the top of the ridge, lol.

There is a lot of truth to what Marcial said. I think with the Garmins, you lose a lot of the expereince. You wanna know more about the game you are chasing, get on those dog tracks and walk em out. Its amazing what you learn and see along the way. Garmins do make a guy lazier... On the flip side, I run the Garmin collars for 2 reasons. One is the safety factor in wolf country, which was not an issure ten years ago, but certainly is now. The other reason, is the Garmin is a great tool for training. You see exactly what your dogs are doing or aren't doing, whose leading the races, whose picking up the loses etc.

I like the fact that i can see the chase in the map, but i agree that you can learn so much more by walking out the tracks.
hey dave im running the 40s, and have heard that people like the 30s more but no one has given me a real good reason y, what is your take on 30 compared to the 40

I love mine. The other day the dogs were on a track and I ran the rest of the road to see what was there for tracks. On the way back I looked at the Garmin and it showed both of the dogs with the dc40's at 4.47 miles and I only lost them once for a short time. It saves a guy a lot of time and extra miles. I spent a lot of years getting the "experience" so it's nice to be able to ride the sled or drive the truck to a few trees. I think it's the best money I've ever spent on hunting equipment. A couple buddies have the 220/dc30's and my 320 with dc40's does just as good as theirs. I put the tuff skin antennas on my collars and think I'll order a roof mount antenna too.

I LOVE MY GARMIN SET UPS. I RUN MY 220 AND 320 ASTROS SIDE BY UNTIL WE START A RACE. IT AMAZES ME HOW SOMETIMES ONE WILL PICK UP THE DOGS QUICKER THAN THE OTHER. I ONLY USE THE DC 30S. DEFINETELY WORTH EVERY PENNY WHEN YOU START CALCULATING THE COST OF FUEL AND YOUR TIME! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.......

The "problem" with the DC40's is the GPS antenna is inside the plastic housing of the collar instead of being mounted up on top of the collar itself like the DC30 does. If you have ever experienced a "?" on your screen where your dog's name is, it was often because of the signal being lost from the collar to the satelite and not the signal from the collar to your reciever. The way to check this is to open up the dog and check the collars reception. If you aren't having any problems with your DC40 then no worries, if you are you can send it in to Buddy ad Double U and he will add a remote antenna and set it up for you for $50. I have heard nothing but rave reviews on how well his set up works. Happy hunting, Casey

I've actually started recommending that the New DC40's are working very well without me moving the antenna. and I'm trying not to encourage the mod. I still have some customers that use Metal covers for their Collars and they need to have the Service done.
But most folks that are using them in the last couple months have been getting very good results out of Factory DC40's.
I'm still a Fan of the DC30's. But I have to be honest, The Early days of the DC40's dropping off are probably behind us. Right now I want garmin to fix another issue with them and that is when the collars just completely DIE. Garmin looks like they just did another update (Spelled Backorder for me) I'm hopeing the new collars will help with that because I have allot of Unhappy customers with DC40's that just don't work period.

That's good new Buddy. If I have a DC40 that is 8-10 months old, would you recomend doing your DC40I or just plugging it in and doing a software update? Thanks, Casey

my 320 dc40 works pretty good, i just need to get a little better at reading the maps
Re: how many lion hunters use 320 and dc 40 and like them
They are the greatest thing since the shock collar. If you choose to take the lazy route, they work for that, want to find out what a lose was all about, you can do that. They are a tool, no more, no less. IMO

James-The problems I have with the 40 are dropping signals at distance or when a dog runs over a ridge or into thick timber. The 30 just seems to not have these issues like the 40.bladeggc40 wrote:I like the fact that i can see the chase in the map, but i agree that you can learn so much more by walking out the tracks.

David, If your fighting issues with Distance between the unit and your Dogs, you need to Change your antenna. Those DC40 antenna are not really good. This is not the same as loosing the GPS signal that is the issue that I work on, but on all DC40's I try to change the antenna just to make sure.
Heck I even change the DC40 antenna with a DC30 antenna on some and they seam to hold up better.
