Lying about the quota?

Post by bristolblue's »

This as been a problem in years past and even this year i have heard of it happening, in my area there is three quota units, and one gets mostly unpassable every year, when this happens the guides start killing lions in one unit and say its from the unit that is unpassable, there for the unit that they can still make it to stays open longer, not only is this stupid for obvisous reasons but it also makes us houndsmen look bad, i was wondering if this was a problem any where else?

Before NV went to region wide quotas from the area specific quotas in 2003, I believe that it did happen. People would kill lions in easier to hunt areas, and report them for harder to hunt areas to keep the easy to hunt areas open. I did not witness this, but did hear of it happening from several sources. Now that we have region wide quotas, I don't think people really have a need to worry, as it is difficult to close the region anyway.

Here in CO. if you try that, you get a ticket. When you kill a lion here, you have to fill out a questionarre and sign it. Then show the CPW exactly where you killed it within a 100 yards or so. They later walk in and check every one that they can to verify it. They also take DNA from every cat killed. That can be used for years to come to verify all kinds of stuff. Doesn't make sense to try and cheat the system anyways, the data they are collecting is helping them and us in the long run.

This was happening in NM too. With our recent quota increase it doesn't seen to be an issue this year.

Agree with Big Mike it was a huge probelm in my area. Now they have upped the quota and the harvest numbers are down lower than any recent year because they don't have to fudge about it and also there are just not very many lions left. I think the Biologists may be a little embarassed by some of the final harvest numbers in some areas in light of the huge harvest quota numbers and so called sustainable mortality numbers they posted.

As I have always said cougar managment in about 90% of areas is simply a shot in the dark becasue they have no hard data to work with.

That was a question that came up when they decided to make a couple areas here unlimited. Any lion checked in they will fill out a harvest report and ask where the lion was harvested. You do not have to check the lion in in the area it is harvested here. So that raises questions if a lion is killed in an area an checked in far away from where it was claimed to be harvested. I am sure that people are doing this to keep the low number quotas open longer.

there has been at least one case of that here in Alberta and I believe they also used DNA to match it to the actual kill site. there are a few western zones that don't hold a lot of cats and i suspect these areas may have fictitious kills. tough to prove if there was a delay of several days in reporting the kill and a snow storm or two to cover any trace.

I am certain that BristolsBlues isn't law enforcement but if he has specific information about this happening he should let law enforcement know. That being said, the quotas are different this year and the quotas are based on ecoregions so, like for example, south slope vernal diamond mtn, north slope daggett, north slope three corners and south slope yellowstone all fall under the same management area with a quota of 65 for the whole area. Makes sense since the lions obviously go back and forth. So I really don't see the advantage to lying about the area this year.................

Back in the day when lost creek east canyon area was Ho and there was a female sub quota. A few guys ended up killing one more than the quota. The fish an game covered it up and only reported it as the quota being met.

Bearkiller is right, its not a problem this year in my area, but the same guide did it in colorado, and its kinda hard when the fish and game officer over the area is riding around in the truck with the guide who is doing it.

Here in utah it happens all the time.... it is plain and simple the deer hunters and SFW want the lion wiped out of this state so if a lion is killed on the wrong unit or it is a female with kittens it is easily over looked..... plan and simple if it kills deer in this state they what it gone no questions asked....the SFW JUST HANDED THE DWR ALMOST 3/4MILLION DOLLARS.....who runs wildlife management in UTAH?
