First off find a blood line that has been bred to hunt the game that you will be hunting. All pups start at different age's. Talk to the breeder as to how his pups start. The blood line will be the most important part of picking your new pup.

when you go to pick a pup from a litter just go in the puppy pen and sit down close your eyes and reach out and grab one . thats about the best way . it ain't so much as picking the pup it's what's done with it after you pick it out .

Black mouth , big butt hole, three hairs under chin, no spots touching the base of the tail and does not curl tail up over back when playing with other pups. These are all the things old timers have told me and believe it or not they seem to help

Yep.
You pick the genetics, not the pup.

Thanx for the help yall. Guess I will pick them like I pick my bird dogs. Out going and not skittish. As far as the bloodline I know both parents are bear dogs. The father supposely has 40 bears treed. I tried googling bloodlines to find out which one would be best for me but all I get our sites selling dogs....Dang I hate gambling. Atleast bird dogs will point at 6 weeks...lol

Like Evertson says, more uniform the litter looks chances are you'll have a good chance at having one turn out. I had my neice pick out my best dog, im a sucker for runts as well. I also prefer black feet, black mouths.

The best way for me is to select the litter you want and then let everyone else pick theirs and grab what is left. I've gotten my two best dogs that way.
If they're going to run trash, they better run to cath it!!!

How to pick a good pup

Post by henpeck »

I like bitches to be younger side age wise and in top condition if I'm raising or picking pups. Say 8 and under. (jmo)Plus check them out good. I bought an 8 week old pup once in Mississippi that came from Kentucky, and was happy with him. Get home a few days later in south Georgia, pup is out playing in the yard and there it was plain as day, he had a bad rear foot. Missing two complete toes and half a pad. Checked and he only had one nut. Long story short, check them out. Make sure all is there. I kept ol' Spanky for a while since I had him and got to pic another pup. Good luck and enjoy
