Coon meat Good?

Post by JOKER09 »

Hey im really new to hunting and i was wondering if raccoon meat was any good to eat, or is there any risk to eating it? Also if it is good how should it be cooked to taste good? Also is raw coon meat good for dogs? :?

yes coon meat is pretty good..you want to get all the fat off that you can and it still will have plenty.. under each front leg there is a gland you want to take off..
then get one of those roasters at Wal-Mart about $20.. just put a bit of water in there and cook it about 5 -6 hours( you will start to smelling it!) Salt and Pepper... get you some good BBQ sauce. dip off as much grease as you can.

I there are a lot of hounds that will not eat coon meat.. but you put it in a roaster like that and .will tell you this...None will turn it down... I fed a bunch last winter to the hounds that way..
Even if they would eat it raw I would not recommend it as there is a chance of parasites.

I have a guy smoke all of my coon meat and it is great. Just make sure you get all of the fat scraped off. The best way is to put it in the freezer for a little while to stiffin it up then it comes off pretty easy. I took the meat from 60 coon to our church's wild game feed last year and it was gone in no time. I didnt even get any when i came through the line.

I asked because raccoons doesn't really look health, but after reading your comments it might not be a bad idea eating coons, never know until trying it right :)
