How do you hunt coon?

Post by michael.magorian »

I was just wondering how many of you hunt coon. There are many different methods of doing it and I doubt if anyone is actually better than the others, but just wanted to hear some pros and cons for the environment.

Road 30% :) Rig 68% walk 2% :x

We have so much brush in the NW part of Oregon. I can cover more ground roading or Rigging then walking. The walk to the tree is enough fitness for me.......Most of the time it is 200+ yards straight UP hill to the tree.....

OK Mel I know what you are thinking, but what happend that night was a one in a 1000000000000 chance......dont think that is the way it is.....HeHeHe

Down here we walk most of the time.. Summer time when my one spot opens up I can rig.. But currently only own one dog that will rig coon.. My older dogs are starting to be insulted by coon hunting  They have decided to be bonifide cat dogs.. Thank goodness for the young ones..

Could road them too but risk getting one of them run over by the kids parting down by the river...

Everywhere else, you walk.

Nora.. I know ;) You should have seen my last time out.. Parked, walked MAYBE 5 minutes and put one up.. I looked at my buddy and said "you wanna tempt the gods by going for more, or call it a night?" It never THAT easy around here..

Well.. We usually drive about 100 miles round trip.. leave at dark and get home after daylight.. Coonhunt every dog you own and have your buddy bring his dogs.. So normally at least 7 dogs at every tree.. Chase skunks with the young dogs.. Fall into the creek more the once..

Some nights you just want to take it easy LOL

How I coon hunt

Post by Gary Roberson »

I am really blessed down here to dump my hounds and road them thru the large pastures. When they stirke, I listen to the race from the truck. When treed, I decide if I can drive closer or need to walk into the tree. I guess that it is a lazy man's way but I sure can cover a lot of real estate in an area where the coon population is not as high as it is in some other areas. My dogs strike bobcat tracks as well as coon.

Depends on where and what dogs we're hunting. Most of the time we stay at the truck and wait for them to tree and either drive closer or walk in depending where they are. If we happen to be hunting a young dog or one just starting out, we kinda follow behind as to get in there asap. The terrain makes a difference too !

Miss Kayla you have dogs that look like Nikki`s dogs in Wa. so I guess were you live your dogs go yaunder in a hart beat and maybe walken behind em might be a death march/ hahahaha !For pups I use too carry a carbide light on my hat and leave my belt lite on off till I needed it. At first the pups are spooked butthey hear your voice and you seam at ease with it goen so the listen too the flow of it and look at the flaim and learn quickly its good !You`d be surprized atthe game you will see their eyes lite up looken at that carbide lite and you can sure help a pup by incurageing it on a tree you see the coon up useing the carbide lite and you incourage the pup too bark on that tree if hes sniffen on it a little, then show him the coon and when he see it in the light oh he goes excited and just blows on the tree barken !

Thanks for your advice, I will be sure to try it sometime. Yes, our Clover bred dogs look alot like hers. I think I have posted to her somewhere on here how much they resemble each other. I have thought it was a death march many a night but so far I have made it out!! Thanks for the comment on my girls, I think they are nice looking too, where do you hunt that's just a hop ?
