Coons with hearing problems

Post by Gary Roberson »

I have been catching a lot of coons on the ground of late. Not sure if my dogs are any faster or coons getting slower. Finally decided that coon's hearing is just not what it used to be. The dogs are getting way too close to the coons before they decide to run. Went out the other day and caught four and three were on the ground.

I dont know about there hearing, but I think they are slowing down. I went out to the ranch this weekend for mothers day and set out my live traps. I caught two mangy looking coons. I took the dogs up to stage a race, I had Ben, and moms new pup Larry. Larry has never been on a coon before and was eating this up! I turned the coon loose and gave it about a hundred yard head start. Ben had him before he hit the tree line! The other one made a sneaky 90 degree turn out of the trap and hid in an old dead tree. Needless to say both my attempts to work the dogs backfired.
