My purebred ridgeback from recently imported S.African lines went and got bred by a red heeler cattle dog from up the road. This is the 2nd time she has gotten knocked up by a local ranch dog. Last time was a was a heeler/collie cross. The pups from the last bunch all turned out to be very tough, smart, and athletic dogs. We even kept one and he's turning out to be a real good hunter and cow dog.
The mother was a $2,000 puppy, that works with my family on the farm and does it all. Great cattle dog, good coon hunting dog, the best guard dog you could ask for, and good with the kids. All around awesome loyal dog.
For those not familiar with Ridgebacks, they are kinda similiar to a Bmc or other american cur breeds, except they were developed in Africa by the pioneers and hunters there. They are most famous for being used in packs to bay African Lion. As a general rule, they are unbelievably athletic, warm to hot nosed, and very loyal. Most ridgebacks in the U.S are from show lines, and as a result many are lacking in the drive and instincts that made the breed famous. MY girl is not one of those dogs! She has more hunt and gritt in her than almost any dog i've seen. Both her parents came from africa and have working history's.
These pups will make great ranch dogs. I'm also willing to bet they will be dynamite at putting big pressure on bears or cats to tree. I can't think of two better breeds at putting teeth on a mean critter without getting hurt, than the heeler and ridgeback.
The pups are 5 weeks old. Overall i just want them to go to good working homes where they will have a job. $50 a pup, unless you can convince me you have the perfect home for one.
This is one of the males we kept. He's almost a year old now.
