Mouth on a hound
I guess I am a perfectionist, but to me the mouth on a hound means a lot to me. I am in the woods to enjoy myself as well as to catch my game of choice. A cold nosed hound that can move a track with consistency with a mouth that makes my knees buckle means a lot to me!

Mouth is very important to me. I've never heard anything better than a huge bawl mouth roaring through a canyon. I like when a dog just sounds angry chasing a track. I like when there voice has that nice wabble to it that carries for miles.

I prefer my dogs on the quiet side until the track is hot. In the kennel they better be very quiet.

Re: Mouth on a hound
A dog must sound like a hound for me to keep it.No squeaks, squeals or screams allowed .My favorite mouth is different than most because i like a good chop mouth. When my dog has a cat jumped and is gaining ground with every step you can tell that he's looking at him and he's getting ready to catch !
Re: Mouth on a hound
I know my dogs might not catch every cat because there flat out open on track and there's no sneaking up but I catch enough stuff to the and I happy that's all that matters. Much easier to follow dogs speak up on track. I've never been around or seen a silent dog, and let me make it clear I am by no means putting them down. I just like my music turned up and on all night

I want the whole works. that sucker better have a huge Bawl mouth,
silent trailers is not a true hound characteristic. Look like a real hound and Hunt like a hound.. I want to hear the trail warm it up and get running and put a FINISH on the end be it a tree ,Bay up or catch and hold.

Re: Mouth on a hound
I like a huge houndy bawl mouth on a dog. I tend to like them tight and honest on track though, not mouthy. I will not keep an all chop mouth dog or one that babbles or is too mouthy. I like a shorter bawl on tree, but will settle with chop on tree, most of mine eventually do settle into chop on tree. I agree though, I have a few with locates that will knock your socks off and make your hair stand up. WEREWOOOOLF... As pups I pick by build and markings, then as they pregress I weed them out by temperment, brains and mouth. Usually have that all sorted out before I ever get them in the woods.

Re: Mouth on a hound
I guess im the odd man out. Really dont care as long as they run bear and they bark.
Re: Mouth on a hound
I agree with you as I love to hear my dogs run and while catching game is the ultimate goal there more than a few nights where there was no tree at the end of the track. But I truly loved listening to my dogs especially a little walker female that had a tenor bawl mouth. She opened when she should but I would have stood there and listened to that beautiful bawl mouth till the end of time. She is long gone now but I can still hear sometimes way off on a cold night still running.
Re: Mouth on a hound
I like a good honest voice be it a chop or a bawl no cherping or screaching. I like to hear them when they have the track right and not hear them when they don't.

Re: Mouth on a hound
they all sound good when they're leading the race
Re: Mouth on a hound
I like the sound of the voices of the dogs I trust and count on whether it be leading a tough bear race, picking up a lose on a bobcat, locating a layup coon or being the only dog to open on an old, cold lion track. Those are beautiful voices to me.
In a perfect world I would have bawl mouth dogs of either high or low pitched quality.

Re: Mouth on a hound
Would like them to have a bawl squawl on track and gold loud chop on tree but not always happening so as long as they get it done with great consistency it doesn't matter to me what they they sound like. Andy
