Quick question for any taxidermist here.

I've been working on a bobcat hide and i've been breaking the hide the last couple of days. From working the hide with my hands, I have gotten some oil onto the edges of the fur and it is matted or stuck together. What is the best way to remove the oil from the fur? Thanks.

Rub borax or tumble it in corn bob dust to absorbs oils.

Thanks for the help. Do I just rub the borax dry into the fur and then brush it out?

sorry to hi jack you but it made me think of the first cat hide i tanned completly i spent days on that thing babying it anyway one day i had been working on it and went over to a friends house and his dads cowdog who i had known for awhile wouldn't get closer or further then six feet from me just growling and rumbling way down deep hackles up took me a bit to figure out the cause but that didn't really make me feel anymore at ease that dog had hate in his eyes! next time over all was fine lol.

That is a good story. My dogs were excited and kept trying to get at the fur while I was scraping the hide prior to tanning.

Get a cheap 30 inch tub from wally world to keep the borax from going everywhere,it will not only remove the oil it will shine the fur.I use it on all my put up fur every year and they shine.
