wolves marking cougar scratch

I was curious what a small pack of wolves would do as they came upon a scatch....scratch was about a week old and at least one wolf went out of it's way to check it out...and lift a leg to the tree it were under.....I have no clue if it means anything. The scatch was of a Tom that we killed after Christmas and a female had renewed it a little and like I said a wolf went into it and marked as well.....

Wolves will mark everything just like any dog, cat scratches , coyote posts where humans have gone etc etc
