dog only hunts sometimes
I have a two yr old walker that hunts hard when I am roading all my hounds, but when we get to the mountains he wont leave the truck. all my others will be opening on track and he just stares in their direction but wont go with them. I have had him on caged coon and he will fight and tree if another dog is with him, as soon as you take the other dog away he has no interest, he will just walk away. it pisses me when he barks at the end of the chain to go hunt and when we get there he wont leave the truck. this is all a recent development he seemed to always be at the tree before, but the last few times I've hunted he does nothing. I have tried leaving him home, and my wife says he will bark until I get home. nothing seems to help. I think he is a cull but would like to here from the more experienced houndsmen before I do anything. sorry for the rant but open to advice.

I have a Plott when I got him at 1.5 years old I had trouble getting him going on a track. If I didn't make sure that he got turned loose with another dog he wouldn't go even if my other dogs were screaming at a bayed up bear 100 yards off the road. I kept on trying him and he eventually got over it and turned out to be a pretty good dog. I always blamed it on the previous owner being to hard in discipline on him.

Is it possible he got jumped on by one of the other dogs while at one of those trees he was making earlier. Strange he just quit all of a sudden. Hope the dog comes out of it.

How long are your races? You walk the entire race talking to him? I had two dogs that did that and I'd just walk the race quietly and eventually they would get tired of how boring I was and take off. 3 times that happened then they seem to catch on just fine.

i culled 1 this year for that reason. he just wasnt that interested in actual hunting. that is why they quit so quick when the other dog leaves, they are just "me too dogs" with no real desire for game. i gave mine many oppurtunities up until it was 2 years old.

The good ones you never have to make excusses for. and if you ever leave one home because he is doing something that he needs to think about, which I have heard works. Dont let him bark, put a bark collor on or a shock collor and leave the remote with the wife, if he is able to site and bark he will learn nothing. I think he is a cull they make more everyday. and dog food is exspensive

Some years back i bought a walker pup out of Missouri.A beautiful tri-colored male,of course he had some well known stud dogs behind him .When he was old enough i started training him.He would go on one track like a ball of fire BUT on the next track he would stand there and listen to the dogs run. He never got out of that habit so i didn't keep him .The owner of his mother called me later wanting to know how the pup turned out.I told him what the dog did and he said oh,yeah ! That trait came from old so and so and he named the stud dog .I wished i'd knew of that trait BEFORE i ordered the pup !

I gave him one more chance and same thing, he looked like a superstar when I had another dog around but when I pulled the other dog away he just went and laid in the shade. I made my mind up to cull him, too many good dogs out there to waste time on a dud. thanks for the replies its nice to hear from others before making a bad decision.
