West Texas Varmint Hunter

Post by Gary Roberson »

Hello
My name is Gary Roberson, I own Burnham Brothers Game Calls and hunt and sell calls and an occasional ranch for a living. Born and raised on the family ranch in South Texas and began calling critters at age 10, hunting my own hounds at 12. Killed my first whitetail buck, a trophy spike while hunting by myself at age 7. Since my hunting turns to work on an occasion, I hunt with my hounds for stress relief. (It beats the heck out of golf and team roping). I live in Menard, TX near San Angelo and hunt coon and an occasional bobcat with my Blue hounds. I like a dog that is intelligent, athletic and has a very good nose. I used to raise Treeing Walkers back in the 70's while living on the ranch in South Texas but it is just too dry in this country and the blues seem to handle the conditions a little better. If I were living where it rained, I might hunt Walkers, also.

Howdy Gary and welcome!! I've done some hog hunting down in your parts on the Callaghan Ranch. I've been down there 9 or 10 times. There sure were alot of coons down there. I wish I'd of had the dogs with me. Happy hunting!

Callaghan Ranch

Post by Gary Roberson »

I have had a standing invite to go down and call critters on the ranch and have not made it. You must be going down for the monster archery hog hunt that they put on in the spring. I have been hunting more in New Mexico of late but it is too hot now will start back calling critters in Oct. I have been catching a few coons around in spite of the heat.

Gary, years ago we started off going to the Texas Shootout and then we worked as staff members for the shoot. We then decided to just go down for two weeks just after the shoot. It was great, every year we had most of the ranch to ourselves and the hogs were everywhere. That place is loaded with coyotes and bobcat also.

Todd, where are you from? I drove from here to McAllen which is down in the Valley of Texas. There was water standing all along the way. We should have an excellent year for hunting as all the critters are raising a bumper crop of little ones. If you want to stay abreast of what I am chasing, go to mossyoak.com. I will be posting my own blog, photos and videos along with all of the other Pro Staffers. I will no doubt be the only one posting hunting with hounds as well as my usual deer, predator and turkey hunting.

Hi Gary, I'm from Havre, Montana, up next to the Canadian border. It was a long drive down there, but well worth it.

Todd that is a long drive to shoot a hog but I understand. I drive approx. 40,000 miles a year chasing various critters. If you go back to the Callaghan, give me a call or stop by I live in Menard which is on Hwy. 83 between San Antonio and San Angelo.

Dennis
Good to hear from you. Still have 4 blue dogs (2 are out of the first male you sent down here, littermate to the male I sent you). One is a female and the other is a male, they are seven years old now. Would really like to get another litter out of her. I have two young dogs out of her and Cl. Rv. Diamond Jim that I like really well.

The two young hounds have really good confirmation and the male has a huge mouth. I think the male is going to be one of the fastest blue dogs I have ever seen. He is a little taller and lankier than I like but is a very good athlete. The female is quite a bit smaller and my idea of what a hound should look like. I am proably going to breed the females back to some of the old Vaughn breeding. I think I have them about as souped up as I can stand it.

A fellow out of SE OK has a female out of the Arkie dog and may breed her back to a male in TN out of Arkie or the Rock dog of Kelly Littlejohn's. Either way, he said he would let me have a pup.

That's proably true. There are some great hounds in South Texas (bobcat that is) but most of them are crossed with running walkers. I know I used to have a few back 30+ years ago. The two males I have are flyers and am looking for a something with a little more ear and cold trailing desire. I may buy a young female that is Cameron line bred out of Utah. I am a little concerned about their speed but I understand they can really trail and are very gritty. I have been impressed with their feet and legs.
Adios,
Gary
