Gascons / My First Lion

Post by Sierra Madre »

Guys,
It is with great pride that I describe to you all my first lion experience.
We are hunting a ranch in foot hills of the Sierra Madre in Mexico.

I wanted to end the hunt by roading the dogs to a tank I have back in the hills.
Upon arrival the dogs started to hit on a cat. Before I could get the puppy out of the truck they struck and we were off. They ran him for about and hour. It got hot. It seemed when chased the lion moved form the thick cover of the valley floor into the low brush and rocks of the hills sides where he eventually slipped the dogs.
Although we did not kill the lion, this encounter was big for me. I was schooled by the experience.

Conditions: The temp was between 95 and 105. They struck at 9AM.
Humidity low. At the writing of post is 44% in Eagle Pass, Texas.

I would like to thank Nathan and Carey and especially David.
Without their guidance I would probably still be loosing my temper at dogs that just cant do this.

Rob

Looks like good country that will be much easier to hunt in December and January. Any time it gets over 85 degrees in that country where there is no shade, it is too hot for me and my potlickers. Mornings are generally cool enough to get in a couple of hours of hunting before it gets too hot.
Adios,
Gary

I was schooled by the experience.
Love it .. I get "schooled on" regularly
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Thanks for the support guys,
I remember when I moved form duck hunting to deer hunting how my patience grew. Now I am moving to deer hunting to cat hunting and again I learning how to be more patient in the field.
Gary and grzyadms, You are right. The problem is I live a good hike form the ranch and family and work have pulled from my ranch visits. When I do get a trip whenever it is I like to take advantage of it and hunt, besides my learning curve is still high and I need to but my time in.
Coyboyvon, I can't think of a better classroom to get schooled in than the Sierra Madra.

If there is a shortcut out their someone pls tell me but until then its clear to me I need to get my axx into the field.

I'm glad you got on track. Would like to here a bit more detail when someone has the time. I didn't realize your humidity was that high. Hope things keep improving for you.
