You shouldn't have to update the collar in order for it to be recognizable to the handheld. Only the handheld needs updated for communication to occur. I would check to make sure that the handheld actually loaded the update. The easiest way to determine if it worked is to plug it back into the computer and run the webupdater again and if it has no updates available, then your good. If it runs the update again, then let it and try again to make sure it works. Make sure to shut off the handheld and then start it up again. It should say "loader updating" or something along those lines when you start it back up.

You may need to update the collar to the current software, but that isn't what is keeping it from communicating with the handheld.

Let us know how this turns out for you.

Okay re updated handheld and collar. Had the collar come up for about three to five seconds when it first synced then lost it couldn't get it back. Went out yesterday was short a couple collars so I busted out two dc20 s and they worked better then the dc 50 I bought. Not impressed at all. Has anybody else just got a shitty collar? My wife ordered it from valley creek hunting supply for my birthday. I kinda wished she would have talked to me I didn't want to try the 50s anyway. After I read about it I was kinda jacked but now I wanna smash that collar to Pieces just for satisfaction.

Okay so I got desperate changed the antenna in the collar. Didn't help or change anything. So I left the collar on all day at work thought I'd kill the battery then re charge and see if it makes a difference. So I jumped in my truck the collar having been on all day. I fired up my handheld as soon as I got power I had the collar come up. Unfortunately it only stayed for maybe ten seconds then I lost it. So I kept the collar on turned off handheld. Went home I have a big project on the go worked till dark. Jumped in the truck to drive across the field back to the house. Turned on the handheld got the collar again. And again i lost it within 10-20 seconds.

Let me know if you ever get it working right , I bought one a month or so ago . I do love the bark indicator but it is my worst tracking collar that I own . I have 3 dc 30s and they all out track the new 50 . I've updated it , reset it and still ain't that great . I'm about ready to send it back. I hunted this morning lost the dc 50 collar at 236 yards and the dog came back to me and it never picked it back up until it was standing beside me .

I just got mine worked out yesterday I thought it worked amazing three chases collar was turned on at 6:00 am and turned it of at about 6;30-7:00 pm still had two bars of battery never lost the collar all day the furthest it was away was4.7 km. I felt it worked a little better then the 30 and way better then the forty. I don't have a long range antenna. I usually lose the30 at about 3.5 km. I am really realy impressed the bark detector worked good.

Bought a 320 and a DC50 a couple months ago mine will pick up my 50 ok and it comes in fine at close ranges but not at long ranges. I also have 4 DC30 collars that work great they will track 3 times the distance of the 50. Have been emailing garmin and getting a run around. I am not impressed with the 50 and I would not reccomend that anyone buys this model. The 50 is the worst model yet.
