wondering some other peoples thoughts

Post by renagade86 »

Got a pretty good pissing match going on this "topic" this weekend and to me the guy is just nuts but hey, I might own up to being wrong. Breeding dogs.
I don't breed dogs just to sell them. I don't call any of my dogs "breeding stock or dogs" or what have you, I breed two dogs that hunt and catch and do good things to each other to get dogs I want. I will give dogs away to friends or kids or sell them pretty cheap. If I have a dog that is great dog but has a slight weakness some where I'll try to need it to a dog who had thoes strengths. Maybe I'm crazy it doesn't matter but hear is where the real pissing match started. He says he has a dog he wants to breed to one of my females I'm not really interested but I listen to him babble on a min about the dog but had nothing to say about it really. I ask him about how he trees, and how he trails how gritty blah blah blah and I just get, really gritty dog trails medium trees good medium nosed for an answer??? Um ok, no I'm not interested. He continues to tell me that it doesn't matter the dogs you cross some have it some don't and how I just want to make money with dogs. Ok that's crap let's add up just the last two months of bills on Hounds and hunting, I would have to sell 60 pups. He keeps telling me how it doesn't matter and my last statement was fine then if it doesn't matter why don't you run down to the pound find a hound looking dog breed it sell them, why are you insisting on breeding to MY blue tick unless it was simply make money from it for your self. Maybe I was being stubborn but my thoughts are breed good dogs to each other and get good dogs, it has worked for me my whole life, sure I still get culls now and then, but I have always figured the breeding stock type dogs are not worth shit to me if you are not hunting them just selling them breeding them. I don't want another pissing match but just some other insight. How does some other guys get what they are looking for?

It is funny we were just talking about this very thing this week. Twice now I have bred good, not what most of you would call great but they do the job I want, although a colder nose would be nice sometimes, to females that would do nothing. The last my first plott that I bought wanting some grit added to my walker black and tan mix. I like slower dogs with lots of tongue for coyotes, The plott female off of apparently a bear line, wouldn't leave you in the bush but would pull a coon or coyote apart. The three pups I kept took nothing to start them. The pups off the other bitch which I have a grandson left and is the father of these pups took a year to start, at the end of his first year all of a sudden the switch came on and started on his own the start of the next year. He would run all day, not fast but steady, unfortunately he is starting to show his age this year.
I keep thinking I would like to get a bluetick of good to great breeding to cross into these pups and keep looking and wishing at the ads and maybe this year I will take the plunge but these young dogs are doing what I want right now. Hell last year when they were starting the would take the coyote into the deer loose it and come right back, wouldn't even touch a deer even though it is in their breeding 2 generations back. And the runt female I wanted to keep but was toooo yappy around the house runs deer and the young lads that got her thinks she is great.
Just my opinion. I am hoping if I come across the cat track again this year and I will try them on it. They are rare around here
Just my thoughts A day in the bush with my hounds is way better than a day at work
Look how many families are so different with the same genes
