BREED DISCUSSION

Post by HOGMAN »

What is the best breed of dogs to run hogs with? In yalls opinions.
I have figured out that the plot lines are more consistent than any other breeds... I raise yellow bmcs, and mountain curs, have never bred our good redbone... So I'm thinking they would probably be like the plots since their both hounds? In other words which breed is most consistent in producing HOG Dogs?

The breed that is most consistent in producing hog dogs is proven dogs outta proven lineage. If the dogs you own suit you breed them and see how the pups turn out. Dogs can only be as good as their owner and the time out in em. Along with good breeding. Old men have been breeding hunting dogs a long time and I bet they ll tell you there's good crosses and bad ones and it's just a matter of finding the good ones that suit you and try to reproduce and better that cross.

I agree with you. Some dogs that have it in them will take less time than others on making dogs though.. unless they're bred to start later... like a parker I have he didn't start till later... Tried a Catahoula, he wasn't fast enough on track for me and he was really moody..... Not much for curs unless they have tons of bottom and hunt.. I got a yellow cur that does... But he cant work a cold track to save his life...

Where I hunt most of the time.. U HAVE t have a dog with bottom good nose cause hogs are hard to find most of the time... And they move around a lot.. U got to have a good nose in em too... that's why im using hounds..... Our hogs run a lot too..... Especially the littler 150 ibs hogs...

I came from a coon hunting background so im partial to hounds but givin the cur dogs a go since i switched to chasing pigs. My lead rig dogs a bluetick. Are hogs are few and far between thats why we chose rigging as our go to style of hunting.

I think which breed you will like the most will have a lot to do with what kind of properties or places you have to hunt, and what hunting style you prefer. Just my two cents.

We do rigging and free casting... we hunt some WMA's down here and we hunt off horses to go ridin and kill a few hogs... but when we go to private land or wanting to kill a bunch we hunt on bikes and kill more that way.... I use curs when we hunt on horses... Only got 1 lead dog for horses this year rest are help me curs...
