Hound hunting wisdom

Post by catdogs »

We prolly all have a few things that stick in our minds that old timers have told us about hounds and hound hunting. What are some things you have been told that you have always remembered? I will start with one:

"You cant put something in to a dog, but you can sure take it out of them!"
Once you go black, you'll never go back! Duncan big game Black and Tans.

Ray Mears told me about thirty five years ago: "those grade dogs never get over seven years old".

It has been comical to see how often he has been right about that.

A good hunter can't ruin a sorry dog but a sorry hunter can sure ruin a good dog.

I could add that
"A good dog might move a sorry hunter towards being a good hunter."

They are still moving me. Might get there eventually.

There was this kid who wanted a coondog in the worst way & this old-timer told him to come over & take his pick out of a litter he had. Well, this kid was over there every day looking at them wondering which one would make him the best dog. Finally after a week, the old timer said, Son, you want to know which one will make you the best dog. The kid said: I sure do.
The Old Timer said: The one that gets hunted the most.

Anytime you get to feeling really important, try telling someone else's dog what to do.

My Uncle told me:

You don't teach a real hunting dog what to hunt, you teach it what not to hunt.
