Need some advice
Need some advice
So got a question. My dogs have been zapped hard on a very fresh deer and they don't want anything at all to do with a deer. But there still running deer and my shock collar doesn't go far enough to "catch them in the act". And when I try to set them up they don't seem to run it. So any suggestions on the next step. Heard of a electric fence and deer gland. I don't have an electric fence. What do I do I run in the steep canyons of mt so going to a spot where they will cross the rd isn't an option any suggestions
Re: Need some advice
How are you hunting your dogs? Sounds like they're getting to far from you. Keep them closer . you can run them down but that's hard work that will likely make you madder then is good for you Or the hounds. Try hunting more open country or where you can stay above the dogs. You can also split them up one hound isnt as likely to do wrong. But if it insist you know where your problem is. Good luck.

I don't believe there is such a thing as hunting too far lol. Are you sure they're running deer? I don't know where you're at in Montana but here there are whitetail, mule deer, antelope, elk, moose, coyote, fox, etc. Stupid as it sounds I've heard guys say that a dog can be broke off of one type of deer but will run the other. Don't know if it's true or not. If you can see them to see they are running deer you should be able to hit them with the shocker. Might be time to buy a better shock collar.
Montana Red Kennels - redbones that catch game and hold it until you get there.

i like to pour a little water on their necks before a training session, it seems to really get a good contact. gets their attention very quickly
Re: Need some advice
Kevin, I live on the east coast so only have white tail. But it is certain that mule deer and white tail smell differently and could be broken off one not the other, they are different species. I've seen dogs that would run only grey Fox not red Fox and vise versa.
PLOTT my suggestion is keep hunting them, correct when u can, some dogs break easy some are hard headed, some never get broke. But they aren't gonna ever be broken not being exposed to off game

If your hunting MT I can assume you are hunting lions. Learn to listen to your dogs see if they are trailing and barking or running and barking when they start off. Chances are if they are running and barking they are trashing. Which could give you a chance to correct them before they get out of range.
