Drahthaar or Airdale

I recently lost my "tag along" hunting dog. He was a heeler and just stayed with me on chases and then joining in at the tree or bay up. Looking to replace him and have been interested in both breeds for some time now. I figured go with something a little more versatile and that would add to the pack a bit more. Just wanting to know guys thoughts on here and also I have had a hard time finding info on breeders for both breeds. Redline on the Airdales and more fur oriented drahthaars. Any info would be awesome. Thanks.

Drathaar will cost you more but versatility off the charts. If you want some versatility but a tag along dog the airedale will meet your needs. I am not downing the airedale but the Drathaar Is a serious hunting machine that will do it all from fur to feathers: point, retrieve, run rabbits, big game etc. JMO

I agree. I'm leaning more towards the drahthaar. Biggest thing for me at the moment is finding a pup or even started dog available. I really don't want to go through all the testing and most breeders require that is sounds like.

I have a couple buddies that have drahthaars and they are amazing dogs, and probably them and GSP's are the gamiest dogs I have ever been around. The only thing I would caution you with is that both their dogs are aggressive towards other dogs, and are not afraid to fight. For that reason I would lean towards the Airedale, plus Airedales if trained right are as versitle as a drahthaars. If your really wanting a drahthaar I would get a puppy so you can imprint your hounds on it, or look into a German wirehair, or GSP they are very close to the drahthaar's and iv never seen dog aggression in those two breeds like I have in the drahthaars. Just something to think about, plus they won't run the big money a drahthaar will. Both my buddies paid $1500 for their dogs and that's puppy price:) hope this helps

Not to change the topic but I thought I would ask for the ones that hunt with the drahtaar on furs do they track and run like a hound do they run quite or open also if you use them for fox and coyote how many do you use

I knew a guy that had draathars he had two of them. Couldn't hunt them together because they did not get along. German wirehair is basically the same dog, maybe less expensive and no fancy testing. The one he couldn't hunt with just anybody, the thing didn't like people all that much. He bird hunted them. Only Airedales I have hunted with were either half or a quarter Airedale and the rest hound. They would go with the hounds.

The best dog we have in our pack at the moment is 1/4 airedale 3/4 staghound he is one smart hunter and will hunt like cur dogs do. we hunt red fox and he finds and catches a lot of them.

I have looked at these as well and the only thing hanging me up is I want to make sure they also have the "fur" drive like Drahthaar has. Or at least comparable.

Never had any exeprience with a drathaar. I've only seen them and they are cool looking dogs. I have an airedale and I hunt pheasant with her. She also blood trails deer for me. She has the run of the property and has killed many vermin but has never crunched a pheasant. I would coon hunt her but there aren't many in my area, rabies did a number on the population. As a companion in the house she's excellent, but when she's outside she's alert and on anything moving

Does anyone recommend any breeder/kennels for any these breeds? Wirehairs, drahthaars, or airdales. I think I would be happy with the right dog from any one of these breeds. Just want to get one out of the good lines.

For Airedales the breeder is everything. If I were you I would join the traditionalairedale.proboards.com website. They have a wealth of information including a breeder's network throughout the US. They can definately answer any questions you have and point you in the direction of a breeder close to you.

Don Turnipseed breeds hunting Airedales out of Northern California I can get his number for ya if you pm me. vomwasatch.com this is where my buddies got their drahthaars from he is out of northern Utah, and their dogs are hunting machines. When I was 13 and before my dad let me get a hound I used my dads German shorthair pointer to run coons, I caught a lot of coons with him he would track dead silent and caught a lot on the ground and would make quick work of them, he also treed better than most hounds iv had. He also caught a lot of mink, muskrats, rabbits, and a couple red fox, and beavers! He was also an amazing bird dog. He was all around hunting, killing fool, his only down fall was he hated the cold! I have been wanting to get either a GSP or an Airedale, and am leaning a little more towards an Airedale cause they handle cold better, but my dads GSP was one of my favorite dogs I've ever owned and would hunt anything you would let him.

I had a guy with 2 of Don Turnipseeds dogs come hunt with me some years ago .. I didn't care for them much .. Matt Thom out of Flagstaff seems to have a good line of hunting Airedales, Mogollon Rim Airedales I believe.. I use to have a whole bunch of Airedales some can be fighters
