Trail dog for different game

Post by James50 »

So I have a good young prospect hound for bear. He did real good for his first season but now I am wanting to get into hog hunting and considering running him on hogs as well. I know some people run their dogs on different game with success. The places I bear hunt there are no hogs and the places I hog hunt I don't believe there are bear but wouldn't bother me if I treed one. So my question is, do you think you can make a better trail dog when just running on one type of game or can running it on two types of game produce the same caliber trail dog? I know running it on two would get it more time in the woods and more time to hone in its trailing abilities but do you think having it run multiple scents would set the hound back any? Just curious what everyone's opinion is.

As a young man i ran multiple species, then for many years it was bobcat only and now in my old age it's bobcat and grey fox.
Running different game won't hinder a dogs ability at all ,although some hounds will excell on some game and not others. One of the drawbacks is you won't catch as much of any one species because you're running several types of game.
When i ran bobcat only it was because that was all i wanted to tree and i wanted to tree lots of them.
Anyway it won't hurt your dogs to run different types of game with the same dogs .
