cat bites

I took one of my female plotts Amira out for a ride a few weeks ago. We were getting water at one of our wells when Amira just split, she was opening up here and there for about two minutes and then you can here a full out race going. I got on ol' Ed and took off towards the sound of the race. I got there just in time to see Amira with a young bob on the ground. As I got closer the bob was able to break free and take off. Amira came to me limping. I checked her over real good and saw that she had bite marks on her rear leg. I know its not season yet for cats so I didnt go after the bob, but trust me in a few weeks when furbearer season opens I am taking my two studs and amira after this one. I gave her pen g as cat bites are known for being horrible. Two weeks later she is still limping around the house, she has improved some but not really a lot, I have her on pen g twice a day and antibiotic ointment once a day.
Do cat bites really get this bad?

she may have pulled a ligament or the bite may have injured something that will just take time and rest to recover from. The dog was probably trying to get out of the cat's grip and wrenched something.
If its infected, she will be running a fever and the wound may appear swollen.However, unless its an unusual infection, a full course of penicillin should knock it out.
If you have doubts, take her to the vet. always better safe than sorry.

Ask U.R.E. On here how bad cat bites get.. i think he's been fighiting a BobCat bite infection for almost a year or it might even be longer now?

He'd be able to help you..

I'd keep a real close eye on it.

After about 3000.00 buck and a year of having my main dog laid up I finally got Penni cleared up. If it swells get her to the vet right away. Have them ID the strain of bacteria and get her on the right anti-biotic for that strait. DON’T wait till it sets in to fatty tissue. Penni had to have surgery to clear this up and has an 11 inch scar and a year of kennel time to show for it.
The day she got bit I gave her penicillin and for the next week but as soon as I took her off she swelled and was very sick. I thought I was going to lose her more than once. Keep an eye on her temp and watch for swelling. If it were me I would take her in and get some anti-biotic anyway....

We took her to the vet today, at my wifes request. She is now on two different antibiotics. Hopefully she will make a recovery because she was the fastest dog I have seen in a while.

How is Amira doing? You may wanna place her in tub with the warmest water she can take and Epson salt to help draw out any poisons. It's what I did when my hound had his bite. Let me know how it goes.

I did put amira in the bathtub with a heavy dose of epsom, she is walking a little more on the leg after the antibiotic treatments and the bath. Thanks for the advise.

What antibiotics did the vet put her on? Im just curious cause now I keep cephalexin on hand at all times for any type of bites. I learned that penicillin doesnt kill all types of infections thats why I keep the cephalexin, its supposed to beat up like 99% of infections. I hope she gets better soon.

She is on difloxacin hydrochloride, and keflex or cephalexin if you go generic. She also got a heavy dose of dexamethasone at the vet.
